We had the good fortune of connecting with Mana Srisudthayanon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mana, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
The most important thing to me is how important that thing is to you or is it the most important priority right now? I believe if we find the answer to support our action we will know if we should continue or not.
For example, it has many times in my life I want to quit drawing, not because I don’t like it anymore but the path to making it to be a career seems to be very hard. But think twice it’s the thing that I love to do no matter what. My life without drawing seems to be just life but not living. Luckily I still have time and nothing else to worry about so I can continue my goal.
I also believe in the method “learn to rest but not to quit”. If I’m sure that I still really want it and its importance to my life, I will find a way to continue. Sometimes when the hard time hit I learn to separate the feeling of burnout from the feeling of giving up. Or if it really doesn’t work anymore, I believe giving up doesn’t mean I’m a loser. I just find a better way that suits me. I think only you will know this answer.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was always drawn to vibrant colors and amazing scenery. I also love complex composition and storytelling. I try to convey those aspects into my art. Most of the comments I got from people is about my color and my interesting shape language. They also like that my art is between paintery and graphics with nice lighting and bold color choice. And I like those comments a lot.
Right now I try to practice more and am open to all the opportunities that present to me. I try to give my best to it. (even I also feel struggle sometimes, but hey, bittersweet is something we like don’t we?) I can’t say my art journey is easy but I think practicing consistently and be open-minded never betray me. If I feel stuck I consider putting my effort in a little more or change the method I approach. I learn to rest not to quit. I learn to ask for helping hands when I need. I learn that we can have a different path to our own success, and if we choose the wrong path we can choose again. I always feel thankful for the people who made me discovered this idea.
For now, I want people to know me as an artist who is reliable, creative, and good at her job!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Now I live in San Francisco and I would say there have many interesting places to hang out! If my friends will come to visit me here for a day or two, I will take them to my favorite coffee place in the morning. Hey, Neighbor is my favorite coffee place. The owner and their staff are very nice, the coffee is good, their pastry is also yummy. We can have a chat for a little while. Around the cafe also have beautiful scenery so we will never get bored.
After that I will take my friend to walk on Valencia street, to visit many cute stores and have my favorite ice-cream place at Bi-Rite. We can chill at Dolores park for a while. We can also do Plein-air there, it’s beautiful and lively. In the evening we can hang out at the Bar in downtown or little Italy. Or even Isakaya somewhere. Just think about it already seem to be a very good day.
San Francisco is not a big city but full of life and many activities to do. I also like to visit the Science museum or around golden gate park. I like that everything is close by and can travel by transportation.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First of all, I always feel thankful to my Mom, She is an amazing mom and she always supports what I do (even she doesn’t understand it sometimes). We’re like friends, we learn and grow together. Second, I want to thank all of my friends who are always kind and support me. They give me good advice, help me go in a good direction, not only in my career part but also in my life. And Lastly, I want to thank you to all of the companies that I have a chance to intern or work with. Thank you to give me a chance to learn and grow up to be a better artist. I also want to thank you for ‘Rise Up Animation’. They give a free section mentorship and They match me with Camille Andre. Her help changes the way I pursue my art and it plays a big role in my art up until now.
