We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Nora Sirohi and Mariell Lødøen Stene and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya Nora Sirohi and Mariell Lødøen Stene, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
One of our best memories together consists of sharing clothes, putting together outfits and heading out into London’s nightlife. Inspired by London’s diversity we developed a common passion for fashion and art. Halfway through our degree we played around with the idea of creating our own brand, but didn’t feel ready at the time. Then, in February 2020, when we had a sleepover and finished watching the show ‘Next in Fashion’, we decided that now was the time for us to start our own brand. We realised that if we don’t start walking, we will never reach our destination.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What sets us apart from many other creatives is that we started with no fashion background and no industry contacts and therefore at times had to go the extra mile. We learned that consistency is important and that if we don’t believe in ourselves no one else will. As young women in business we had to learn to stand up for ourselves which was not always easy, but it has brought us to where we are today.

What makes our brand special is the fusion between two contrasting cultures, India and Norway. Through our friendship we had the honour to share and experience each other’s cultures. The bold colours and unique designs are inspired by distinct memories from our childhood, places we have visited, unique landmarks and traditions. We are proud of being a niche brand that focuses on slow fashion and quality pieces. We are a responsible brand that holds high social and ethical standards. The garments are made in a small fashion studio in London by very talented and highly skilled women.

With our brand MAYA MARIELL we are not just creating a product, but a cultural experience and an invitation to embrace individuality. We share our personal stories through each design.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
LA has a very special place in our hearts. Two of our favourite spots that we believe are a must visit when in LA are the Melrose Trading Post in Fairfax and Malibu for a beautiful sunset. The Melrose Trading Post is a flea market that features a range of different vendors including collectibles, vintage clothing, and antiques. It’s not unusual to run into a celebrity doing their shopping there. When in Malibu, you need to make a stop at Cielo Farms for an unforgettable wine tasting experience.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to give a very special shoutout to our sister, Faye Sirohi. She has supported us and the brand from the very beginning. We could not have done it without her. She is an extremely talented writer and actress, no one can put words onto paper as good as she does. Her words and wisdom have encouraged and inspired us along the way.

We also want to say a huge thank you to both of our families and friends. Everyone has been so supportive and encouraging from the start. Sometimes an encouraging word from your grandma is all you need to overcome doubt and to keep going.
