We had the good fortune of connecting with Maytal Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maytal, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Work life balance used to mean work hard, party hard. I used to think that if I went out more, it would somehow “balance out” all that I was doing and that couldn’t be further from the truth. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to what a balanced life looks like. For me it means having a lot of space in my calendar for things I love to do and even sometimes just doing nothing.
Balance these days means being strategic with what I spend my time on and who I spend it with. It also means having a high level of integrity – the more you do what you said you would do, the more time seems to stand still. I’m 100% more productive than I’ve ever been and also “working” less than I’ve ever worked which means I’m headed in the right direction.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Eden Life was started as a direct result of all the waste we were creating during the pandemic. My husband and I began our zero waste journey over two years ago and after doing research on what plastics actually get recycled, I was shocked to learn that most plastics still end up in landfills and in our oceans. And it’s EVERYWHERE! Right then and there we made a decision to transition to buying as little or no plastic as possible. I’m super proud of that decision and for starting a business during a pandemic. I’m excited about all the incredible vendors I’ve been finding with beautiful zero waste products and a real commitment to making a difference.
Starting a business to me is usually the easy part. Continuing for the long haul is something that takes perseverance, dedication and a strong WHY. This was always my previous challenge when starting a business- was I in it for the idea or the lifestyle or just to make money? In this case I realized saving the planet was about as big of a WHY as I could get and it’s helped me push forward. It’s still the early days of this business and I know my WHY will get me through all of it.
Eden Life is all about bringing beautiful aesthetic and quality to zero waste living. I’ve always loved interior design and creating beautiful spaces and our products are able to deliver that while not looking too vanilla.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Such a fun question! The beach to me is one of the most magical places. I would take my best friend to Will Rogers or a beach in Malibu and we would head to the Palisades Village to grab an ice cream or a snack at Erewhon. In Malibu, we love Sunlife Organics. For a foodie friend, I would take them to Smorgasburg on the weekend- amazing food trucks and such a great vibe in DTLA. A hike would definitely be in order and the less people the better so I would head back to Will Rogers for a great hike with ocean views. My new favorite activity is biking so we would rent bikes and bike down to Abbot Kinney followed by Salt & Straw ice cream (yes I love ice cream) and shop at Everlane. If my friend is interested in wine, we would head up to Solvang or Ojai and take some great wine and more nature. I’m pretty much a homebody so that would be the extent of going out in LA.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are SO many people and groups that have absolutely contributed to my success. I’ve done tons of personal development work with Landmark Education which has expanded my life in ways I could have never imagined. My mentors, leaders, and especially my group have all held me accountable and always seen me in my greatness (when I haven’t always felt great). Our group met in a seminar 8 years ago and we’ve been meeting every Tuesday morning for breakfast ever since! Even during the pandemic, we switched to zoom and haven’t skipped a beat. My success is really thanks to their support.
I’ve also always been a fan of coaching and have had some fantastic coaches along the way.
I recently participated in Tony Robbin’s Unleash the Power Within weekend and it was fantastic! I was able to work through some limiting beliefs and create physical energy I don’t think I’ve previously had.
In tougher times I always turn to a good Gabby Bernstein book. “The Universe Has Your Back” is a favorite in reminding that the world is happening for you, not to you.
And my husband has always been my rock, my butt kicker, and always reminds me of all that I’m capable of (and make me laugh when needed!). I’m incredibly grateful to have him as my life partner.
