We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Wilder and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mia, why did you pursue a creative career?
Perhaps more interesting than what makes you choose an artistic career, is what makes you stay- and for me it is community. I think we all struggle with staying rooted in authenticity when we’re just trying to hack the algorithm and ‘make it big’. But for me, being surrounded by artists reminds me that, in the end, we’re all just sharing in this human experience, and all we can do is tell stories in the hope that it will heal us. In the process, we find that we all have a lot more in common than we thought, and by telling your story, you actually offer voice, representation, or just comfort in the middle of the night to those who share in your experience. And that, to me, is the most beautiful, human thing, and I want every part in it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an actress, model, writer and since recently, singer- songwriter. For me, the biggest struggle was/is unlearning the notion that it is too late or you’re too old to learn something new. Over the last two years, I went through an immense life change: going from living in LA as an actress, to being a traveller in India with no set destination. I began to channel all these new experiences the only way I know how- by writing about it. I am currently working on an EP of stories I have gathered from strangers and friends I crossed paths with on the road. It is wholesome, thoughtful, messy and honest, and I am super excited to share it with the world!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely set aside a day to grab beers from Sunset Beer and take them down to Echo park and have a lazy picnic. What I love most about LA is the independent music scene. You can check out The Satellite, Junior High, or wander into any bar on a live music night and see something totally unique. Of course, no trip would be complete without a beach day and my favorite is Point Dume. You want to grab ice cream at Van Leeuwen in Hollywood (their vegan cookie crumble strawberry is my all time fav) and take a beautiful drive down the PCH windows down with music on. Some of my best memories are also on Dockweiler beach, where my friends and I make a bonfire, bring the guitar and blankets and sing songs and roast marshmallows at sundown. Lastly, tacos! I would argue that El Taurino on Olympic and Elden has the best tamales and al pastor tacos ever, and they’re open late!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shoutout to the Art of Acting Studio where I heard for the first time that “You are not an artist the moment you step on stage. You are an artist everyday, when you stop to admire a flower, or understand the person in front of you a little deeper.” I still think about this everyday.
