We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Woo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
Good music blasting through the speakers. Being surrounded by loved ones and vibrant energy. And perhaps a few shots of tequila with some delicious food. What was just described is an ideal scenario for us at FRIENDS SF. We realize that with so much going on in the world and in our lives – it’s always nice to sit back and enjoy some of the little things. We realized we don’t need to do too much to be happy. Some of our best memories stem from simplicity like what was just described above.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
FRIENDS SF is a DJ collective that focuses on expressing individuality through music and building community through events. We want to create safe places where everyone feels welcomed and play music without having to worry about any barriers. With this mindset – we were able to create a team with like minded people and our journey began. However, as most of us have dealt with – life is filled with ups and downs. Til this day we go through our trials and errors with events and with ideas, especially in this industry where a lot of variables need to be accounted for. I believe we’re able to overcome these obstacles by staying resilient as well as being adaptable. For example once COVID-19 hit in 2020, we were able to adapt from live events to online streaming. Challenges can also feel a lot easier as we remember our “why” and embrace the support from our community. We’d love to continue to keep expanding and growing our reach to bring joy through our talents.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Attending a FRIENDS SF event should be on the top of the list: Friday Night Pins, Listening Party, Who Cares. With that being said we love to support our small businesses, local restaurants, and local venues with all our favorite DJ’s. Before starting out the night it’s always nice to relax at our parks or beaches – weather permitting. For food Fresca on Irving is always a good move for some Peruvian dishes. Depending on the day we can have events ranging from R&B and Ribs at El Rio, Candyrain at F8, Motown Mondays at Madrone’s, Good Friday’s at Providence, Cuffin SF at Pop’s, Les Play House at Midway and much more. It also wouldn’t hurt to grab a few snacks and drinks at your local liquor store such as S&B Liquors on Post St. With all that being said, make sure to end your night at Taqueria Vallarta.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
FRIENDS SF wouldn’t be where we are today without the community around us. Starting with our determined team – Dru, Ardi, Tommy, Sean, Charlie, and Nunu – who work hard to create and run our events and to our friend Reaux who helped create our logo. To our first opportunity thanks to Trung and the Hometown Heroes family that opened many doors for us. To the Bay Area DJ Community and all the dope venues we got to play at – thank you for the good times and sharing this space with us. To all our artists, creatives, videographers, and photographers for making each night more special. To Kelvin for always keeping it real. To our friends that turned family – for your unconditional love and encouragement. And last but not least – to everyone who comes and supports our events, our social media, and our dreams!
