We had the good fortune of connecting with Monique Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Monique, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Working as a makeup artist for company’s like Sephora and MAC provided the opportunity of being able to meet and connect with women of different shades, cultures, and backgrounds. Along the journey, these women expressed the positive impact I had on them as their makeup artist. I was able to connect with women in a way that was more than just skin. My clients would vent and share their lives freely which included life experiences and insecurities that had an affect on their self esteems. I began to realize the impact that beauty practices had on women and how they viewed themselves. I have been fortunate enough to help them feel beautiful even in times when they may not have felt so. After realizing this, I decide to expand my business in a way that would be more than just makeup and outer beauty. But it would focus more on empowering woman to embrace and love their natural beauty.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe the purpose behind what I do keeps me busy professionally and sets me apart from others. I prefer to use beauty as a way to enhance natural beauty rather than hide ourselves in which we become someone else. I also love to use my craft as a way to bring awareness to causes like depression, domestic violence, and human rights. I am most proud of the passion I have to be purposeful in what I do. I’m excited to watch lives change as Her Beauty. Her Vibe. grows and impacts woman of all shades, cultures, and lifestyles.
After working for Sephora and MAC, I realized that I could create my own brand with my own philosophy on how to promote beauty through my profession. As I continued to experience life and take risk, my business grew more and more. After having my first child and being a recent divorcée, it became very difficult to see the vision clear but despite the challenges, I continued to meet women of different walks of life who needed my help feeling beautiful. I am still working on overcoming the challenge of being confident but am embracing the journey as much as I can. Connecting with woman who has similar life experiences, also motivates me to press on because that is exactly what Her Beauty. Her Vibe. is all about. Empowering one another to be the best person we can be despite the challenges we face. I’m learning that I can make room for myself to be true to who I am and make mistakes along the way. I’m learning that life is about taking a risk and on the other side of fear is the purpose that we desire to walk in. I would want the world to know that anything is possible despite what others say, despite what our fear tells us, and despite what our past looks like.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friend to Oceanside, California were the weather is nice and the beaches are beautiful. I would rent a Air bnb on the beach where we could listen and watch the waves for the balcony while eating lobster rolls from Wicked Maine Lobster. I would also order us a few peach margaritas because those are my favorite! For me, the beach is the most interesting, relaxing, and exciting place to be. It’s the best place to be when I’m looking to unwind and connect with life. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to God. He has given me so much vision and used my pain to create purpose in my life. I thank God because He allows me to not be ashamed of my past but to take what I’ve been through to help others. Through my life experiences and natural gifts of because a beauty guru, I’m able to affect change in women’s life’s in a way that’s deeper than skin. A change that penetrates the heart and soul, which I am very grateful to God that I’m able to do what I love.
I also want to shout out my best friend Veronica Hess for loving me, supporting me, and uplifting me throughout my journey. No matter what I’ve gone through and no matter how many times I doubt myself, she’s always there to support me and remind me of who I am.
I would also like to thank my aunt Ebony Wright for helping me with the vision of Her Beauty. Her Vibe. I’m blessed to be able to talk to my aunt when I’m feeling discouraged and she’s always there to help guide me and give me direction in every area of my life.
Last but not least, I thank my mom Angela Wright who has always done everything in her power to raise me to be a strong woman, capable of conquering anything that life throws at me. All the care, love, and guidance my mom has poured into me, has help shape me into the woman I am today.
