Meet Myles Clohessy | Director-Writer-Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Myles Clohessy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Myles, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
It’s such an interesting question because for me there is no balance. It may sound crazy to some (especially my ex’s) but it isn’t to me. I absolutely love what I do. I wake up every day so excited to get to “work”. Because work for me is just making movies. Creating stories. And ever since I was a kid that’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, was direct films, make movies. So my work-life balance is pretty fluid. It’s one in the same. I think over time too, as I’ve gotten more into solely directing films, the work aspects of my life have certainly increased. Putting together a film, then directing it, is 12-16 hours of my day, every single day. And when I’m not literally “working” whether that be on set directing or writing/producing at home, I’m always soaking up everything life is giving me and using it. Every experience I have day to day can be used in a story or a scene. Everything influences my “work” so its all one in one. That being said, there is a difference between that and “active work”. So hanging out with friends, going on dates, just lounging is slightly different. But again, lounging watching movies is my homework. Its necessary and vital to my job. I’ve definitely unfortunately been seeing less of my friends and all that but some years, especially in the beginning, you have to buckle down and get to it. And I’m willing to sacrifice it all to make it to where I need to get. That being said, there’s always enough hours in the day to get a pint with friends after a good days work or go on a sexy date and have time away from movies with those you love. And in the end, I can use all those non “work” experiences for my work!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m most excited about the fact I have four feature films coming out in the next year that I wrote and directed. It’s been an absolutely crazy year personally and professionally. Many ups and downs. The highest peaks and the rock bottoms. But in the end, I have four films that Ive spent years of my life working on, that I am very proud of, that will be coming out for all the world to see and hopefully enjoy. Making any film is absolutely the hardest thing to do. You’re asking complete strangers to entrust you with hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions of dollars and all the weight of the world is on your shoulders as the director to come through and make them back their money and make a good piece of art. So, hopefully I’ve done that.. We’ll see. But through it all, the biggest lessons I’ve learned are that you REALLY can do anything. If you put your foot down, believe in yourself over everything, and never ever give in or up. Believe in your vision and stick to it. Everyone will have opinions. As a director and in life, everything in the end falls on your shoulders. Most of the time, no one else has a real stake in your endeavors, so if the house is going to come burning down on your head, at least you died knowing you stuck to your guns and did what you thought was right. And in the end, I’m just the happiest kid in the world, making movies, no matter how hard or how many sacrifices are made along the way, when I’m finally on a set, directing, creating a story, it’s all worth it. It’s the best job in the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am traditionally a New Yorker, but since moving to Venice Beach, it’s been so magical. I would advise and take anyone who visits to the beach. No matter how hot as hell it is anywhere else in the city, the beach is always cool, sunny, breezy and a great time. The sunsets on Venice Beach are so magical. I’m out there every evening at the end of the day just taking it in. And Rose Ave I think has some of the best of the food scene in all of LA so I would take them out to some really cool places there near where I live. Its electric, it’s fun, it’s sexy. I love it.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe my whole shoutout to my parents. Ever since I was a little kid, they have always been there supporting me in all my endeavors. They have been the best support system and have always encouraged me and pushed me in athletics and the arts and I would be nowhere without their support. They deserve all the credit.
