We had the good fortune of connecting with Nekedra Gilbert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nekedra, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
TRB Creations’ mission is to provide alternative solutions to products that create waste. My customers are parents who coslept with their children or have children that wet bed. Care for the blanket is easy for any busy parent and is also multi-purpose. The traditional mattress protectors are very loud and noticeable, which can cause confidence issues. I made my Discreetly Neat Blanket as a mattress protector, which provides comfort and confidence for parents and children every night. All the scrap material creates our reusable cloth pads and patchwork clothing. These cloth pads offer those with a menstrual cycle or who recently gave birth a safe alternative to the chemical-filled disposable pads.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Since I can remember, I have always been creative and have always questioned how things work and why they exist. I love to tell people the funny story of how I wouldn’t use a microwave until I knew how it worked. As I grow into expressing myself more, my art and creativity have transformed my entire life. The products and services I provide are a way to give a piece of me to the world. Sustainability is a new term, but the practice has been the same for years, especially in the Black community. With every product I create, I save the materials to create more.
Being a spiritualist allows me to connect with myself and my gifts to help those that need guidance in their journey. After losing my Grandfather, I dived into redefining what I wanted my life to be and the wealth I wanted. Knowing that life is a gift we all have, I decided to use my logical mind to help others learn about themselves. Somedays, when I gather herbs and journal, I remember the six-year-old version of myself doing the same thing. It’s gratifying to know that I am creating a connection to myself and offering others to do the same. I am frank with everyone about my journey. Days are challenging, but instead of trying to identify why I feel the way I think. Acknowledging what I am experiencing allows me to let go and come back to my center so I can create.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my child, AK. When I became a parent, I knew who I would be and what I won’t do. Over the years, it has changed and created a passion in me to unlearn and move forward. Their presence helps me realize that I am in this world to develop and stay true to myself. While doing this, I understand that we shouldn’t try to change others or seek what we think we lack in them either. Every day we are together, we grow towards our own better versions.
