We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicolas Bates and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nicolas, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I had worked enough day jobs that were so soul crushing that I literally could not do it anymore. I just had to take a chance stepping out onto my own with photography.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an editorial and portrait photographer who loves to tell stories through personal projects. I am most excited about finishing a personal portrait project about folks who reside in a small beach town in Southern California. I feel my brand encompasses both a refined and gritty product; a so-called polishing of what naturally exists.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love landmarks, and Los Angeles has no shortage of them. The main spots to hit would be the Griffith Observatory, Santa Monica Pier, Hollywood, Long Beach, OUE Skyspace, the canals in Venice, the LACMA lights, multiple hikes in different areas, a trip out to Big Bear, Joshua Tree and Malibu would definitely be must-dos!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I think my fellow photographer and friend Michael Der definitely deserves a shoutout for his friendship and encouragement, whether it be personal or professional. I am grateful for our friendship and have always seen great value in it.
