We had the good fortune of connecting with Ollicia Maeona and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ollicia, why did you pursue a creative career?
I discovered a love for the arts at a very young age. As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a desire to impact the lives of others in very unconventional ways. It started out as me standing up on my mothers dining room table using anything I could find as a microphone while singing at the top of my lungs, at 5 o’clock in the morning. No training. No mic. Just me and whatever song came to mind. As I got older I joined a repertory theatre company in my community where I was able to train and be myself unapologetically every single day. There, not only was I able to perform but I adopted so much joy and discipline. Being in that type of artistic environment opened me up to all the other compartments within show business and I soon fell in love with hair and makeup. I realize that everything that makes my heart smile plays a significant role as a performer, creative, artist and influencer so I merged them all together. 15 years later I’m pursuing a degree at one of the nations top Performing Arts schools, and I have created a brand for myself “Olliebslayin” where I sing, act, provide hair and makeup services for affordable prices, and also partner with other small businesses just like my own. My mission is to simply make a difference in as many lives as possible simply doing what I love.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I create music that’s original and true. I also do makeup – natural, glam, and stage. I believe what sets me apart is the fact that not only do I perform but I transform as well through my art. I can sing but I can also hop in and slay your face all at the same time. Often times people can become very greedy for all the attention, I on the other hand understand that “People who shine from within don’t need the spotlight.” So I can put aside me ego and collaborate with others with the intention on creating magic for the both of us rather than just competition. I genuinely want to see everyone succeed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I absolutely love Caribbean food so if you’re rolling with me we’re definitly going to eat Jamaican We’re going to Times Square
Museums
Central Park
Harlem
The Apollo,
Broadway show is a must have – “Ain’t Too Proud”, “Slave Play”, “Wicked
Were taking pictures and I’m definitely doing your hair and makeup even if we don’t go anywhere that day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am who I am today because of my supportive, sidekick aka my mother. Though we’ve had our struggles like many others. It’s because of the struggle that I never gave up on success. I’m far from where I want to be but putting a smile on her face reminds me of my why. Why I started and why I can’t give up. She taught me what it means to love, to be a women, to try and most importantly, how to spread as much love even on my worse day.

– I love you forever mommy!
