We had the good fortune of connecting with Pepe Hidalgo Ramos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pepe, why did you pursue a creative career?
Everything in my life has always involved music and it has always been the thing that fulfills my life the most. My mom is a sound engineer, plays guitar, and is very passionate about music, so she was the one who showed me bands like Metallica and Led Zeppelin when I was very young. She bought me my first drum set when I was about 8 years old and all my closest friends at the time started playing instruments too. I was in multiple bands throughout my entire teenage years, so I was surrounded by music during some of the most important years of my life. All I knew was music and playing drums, so it was never a choice, I just kept doing what I did and never second guessed it. My mom always told me “You have to do what you love, never worry about money. If you do what you love, with passion and honesty, people will see that and money will eventually come”. Her words marked my life, and I’m still here doing the same thing and every time I get scared or I think of quitting, I remember those words and I keep going. My artistic career is what really fulfills my life, and it is what I know how to do best.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been a professional drummer for over two decades now working full time in the music industry. I do everything from session work, to recording music for different artists and bands, advertising, commercials and film, and I also tour and play live shows with many different artists from all around the globe.
I believe what sets me apart is the fact that I’ve lived in so many parts of the world, which added culture and experience to my creativity and musicianship. All of those experiences helped me develop my art, uniqueness, and voice through the drums. Every artist has their own voice, and all of my past experiences are reflected in my artistry.
At this moment, what I’m most proud of and excited about is the upcoming Album of my band Xucrut. We are an international trio formed by Fito Otero (Producer from Chile), Carmine Mattia (Rapper from NYC), and I. Our music features live performances mixing hip hop, jazz, and psychedelic rock. Working remotely from different parts of the world, we have released and EP in 2019, and 3 singles in 2020 and 2021.
When in comes to how I got to where am today, I believe consistency and perseverance playing music is what got me here. It hasn’t been easy, but when you love what you do, it’s much harder to quit. I also believe having graduated from one of the most prestigious music schools in the world, and having met an abundance musicians there with whom I work with everyday now, had a big influence. In addition, having lived in big cities such as NYC, LA and Boston where I had the chance to play, share stages and recording sessions with incredible musicians from their own scene, also added immense value to my career.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is such an amazing city to visit, so when my family came to see me (after 2 years of not seeing each other), we has so many things we wanted to do and places to see, that we literally didn’t have enough time to do everything!
Some of my favorite places to go to are: Zuma beach in Malibu, (which is by far my favorite beach here), Griffith Park, Marina Del Rey, hikes in Altadena, Hollywood lake, and of course, pro drum shop haha!
My favorite places to eat are: Porto’s Bakery (which I think is a must if you are in town), World Empanadas, (has the best empanadas I’ve ever tried with tons of Vegan options too), Nomoo (the best vegan burgers), and the best Donuts at Donut Friend!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely I owe it all to my family, especially my mother, who always supported me in my music career, and pushed me to be better and to follow my dreams without worrying about anything else. That has been my foundation to pursuing a career in music, which we all know is not easy. I also need to give credit to my Fiancée who also has supported me in every single aspect of my life. She has stood by me in my hardest and darkest moments, I can’t thank her enough, and I wouldn’t be where I am without her. Lastly, I can’t forget my closest friends, my music colleagues and all the people that have trusted me with my art.
