We had the good fortune of connecting with Phil Rice and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Phil, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my success is perseverance. I started my fashion brand, Dude Lifestyle, when I was 16, and my brand as an actor even younger, at age 13. Along my journey, I’ve heard it all. But, the constant is I never give up. Only greatness can stand the test of time. I’ve always been obsessed with the concept of greatness and that notion has motivated me to achieve all that I have accomplished and everything I will achieve. My ultimate goal is to take the perseverance that is inherent in my spirit and breathe its life into my work as an artist.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Being an artist, I am aware I am part of a distinguished group of influencers, who have a powerful messaging platform. By perfecting my art, many may want to simulate my lifestyle and life choices. As such, I take care to provide a positive model that encourages others to be the best version of themselves and expect the same from those within their sphere of influence. Each morning, I wake up excited to take on the day and to continuously improve upon who I am and the impact I have on others.
I have faced a mountain of tribulations to get to where I am today. What keeps me going is thinking back to the reason why I started in the first place. One of the most important lessons I have learned thus far is to take joy in whatever it is that we choose to do. Whether it’s being a cashier for Carl’s Jr., or playing the role of Superman in a blockbuster movie, people will feel the passion we put into our work and will always be able to tell if we are just “going through the motions”. It’s because of this lesson, I put my heart and soul into every piece of art I create. And, if it doesn’t move me, I destroy it and create something that does.
As Jay-Z once said, “I’m not a businessman, I’m a business man”. I’ve been manifesting my vision ever since I can remember. A screen actor is only a fraction of who I truly am. Beyond that layer of myself, I’m an entrepreneur that cares deeply about the world at large. My mission is to innovate across a variety of industries including (but not limited to): music, film, technology, and fashion. I want to communicate through my life’s story to never give up on your dreams. We are the commanders of our destiny and it is up to us to define who we are.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
What a great question. LA has some of the best food in the country but the key is knowing where to go. If a friend of mine came to the city the first spot I would take them to is Cha Cha Chicken on Ocean Ave. The ambiance and food are top of the line. Since it’s right on Santa Monica Pier, we would grab some beach time right after eating. To conclude the first evening, we would hit The Hollywood Walk of Fame for motivation and see all the legends who got their own golden star. Upon leaving, it’s mandatory we get some Benihibachi fried rice to go!
The next morning, we’re heading to Venice beach! As you can tell, beaches are my favorite place to hangout. I would have to show my friend Venice too, because it’s so different from Santa Monica. After checking out the skate park and the street vendors, it’s only right we get tacos. Street tacos are always a good choice, but since it’s an occasion, Red Teddy’s Tacos it is. They have some of the best Birria in the city.
At this point, I’d tell my friend, let’s hit the gym (lol). We got to make use of that good food. Post-workout, we’d get an Acai bowl from Robeks on our way to get fresh and go shopping. There’s so many great malls around, but I’d go to Fairfax so we can check out all the upcoming and trendy brands.
After getting fresh, in the evening it’s time to go out and check out the LA nightlife. My favorite place to grab a drink is Dirty Laundry in Hollywood. The owner, Keith, is the man! There’s multiple rooms playing different music, so there’s always one that’s playing what I want to hear.
We’d have been going hard all week. I’d elect to grab some lunch at Hot wings Cafe in Sherman Oaks to fuel up before making some music. To wrap up the trip, I’d take us to Hype Studios LA to lay down some tunes about living it up and enjoying Los Angeles!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Family is everything. I dedicate my Shoutout to my parents, brother, cousins, aunts, and uncles. Their support and wisdom means the world to me, and I can always count on them to keep it real. They are a source of strength and a fountain of love that keeps me grounded in my world of cameras, competition, and creativity.
