We had the good fortune of connecting with Rocky Luckey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rocky, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This one is a doozie! A wise mentor once said — get hit with a bus and keep going. LOL Part of what’s behind that is the experience that things you’ve planned and especially things you haven’t planned are going to pop up. Keep going! There are going to be several factors, external and internal, that will tell you to give up but don’t. This is if you are the one standing in your own way. If you are having bouts of negative self-talk, you need to shut that down and keep going after your dreams. NOTE – I am not saying to continue to do something that harms you or hurts you or others. If you’re doing that, or not able to eat at least one meal, you probably need to stop. But, if that’s not the case you’re just in your thoughts or on the other side of a rejection letter; keep going. The Apollo booed Lauryn Hill. They didn’t know! They don’t know! So you keep going!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My path was definitely not straight. I worked in law, hospitality, public relations, customer service, music, fabrics, and security before allowing my creativity to be my guide. I would say that my ability to understand and manage personalities is uncanny. It has been my saving grace in more than a few incidents and has helped me build lasting relationships across industries. I am most proud of the relationships and connections I’ve been able to establish and the creatives who’ve been able to take a leap of faith and start their own businesses based on my nudging and urging. It took a long time for me to trust my gut in terms of my career goals and opportunities. I don’t want others to experience the same, so if I can speak to someone and help them narrow down a choice or give them the extra boost of confidence to lean into that creative urge, then I’ve supported another. Along this twisty road, I’ve dealt with sexism, racism, and microaggressions in the worst form, on top of whatever internal voices try to push negativity. Prayer, mentors speaking into me, standing firm and speaking up helped beat down stubborn doors and enlighten narrow perspectives. I’ve learned a lot about myself, but one of the most powerful lessons was to never dim my light for fear of perception. You can only handle yourself. I think also, letting more creativity lead early on. History is made when people dream, not when they try to follow rules or look to what others weren’t able to accomplish. Finally, I would want to be known for professionalism, goal-getting, and changing the narrative surrounding my culture and our lived experience to be as complex and beautiful as we are as a people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Jamz Creamery in Inglewood, CA., their ice cream sandwiches are legendary! The Pan in Gardena, CA., their everything is delicious!
Simply Wholesome in Ladera Heights, CA., their culture and garden burger hit everytime!
Preux & Proper in DTLA, shrimp and grits are a woman’s best friend.
B&R Burger Hawthorne, CA. because they have THHHEEEEE best turkey burger combo and OMG Burger in Gardena, CA. because that veggie burger and peach cobbler milkshake are second to none!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The Village – family, friends, mentors – who give encouragement and criticisms when they’re needed. The sisters who push back when I try to speak negatively over or about myself. My big brother and cousins for always supporting me. My dad’s love. My mom, aunt, and daughter for inspiring me. My husband for challenging me.
