We had the good fortune of connecting with Sage Mayer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sage, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
This business is not easy. I audition a lot and 90% of the time I don’t book a job or hear back from a casting director. I have to just know I gave a good performance and move on to the next audition. Also, set days are long and not glamorous at all. If you are looking for glamour this is not the business to be in. You have to enjoy it on every level, whether it is studying lines, doing auditions, or doing research for a role. You have to love it all!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an actor, a writer, and a dancer. I think I have been performing even before I could walk. I always loved all music of any kind and would hop on a stage or dance in my stroller when I heard a nice beat. I love the arts. My joy comes from going to museums, concerts, theatres, movies, and any festival that pops up.
I currently work in film and TV and I love creating characters and integrating my personality into them. It is so rewarding and satisfying. This acting profession is a strange one. There are rules and there aren’t rules. It’s so expressive and then sometimes it isn’t. I am so happy to be filming right now on projects that I really care about. I recently wrapped a role on a 80s, Sci-Fi movie that will be released next year and I am in talks to appear in more episodes of a tv series I filmed last summer. You can also find me in a new horror/crime feature film coming out soon. If you like intense, splattering, horror and mystery, you are going to absolutely love this movie.
What I have learned is you have to do what feels right and find great people to collab with and trust them completely. Do what you love and create. I want everyone reading this to choose what they want to do and just do it. Don’t wait for approval from anyone. Once you know what you want to do, you will find your community and you will succeed. Know that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If they arrive in the morning, we would got straight to breakfast and have the most mind-blowing pancakes at Flore Vegan on Sunset Blvd. not only is the food delicious, they are the nicest people.
After filling ourselves with that goodness we would drive over to Ameoba music on Hollywood Blvd and pick up some old DVDs and music and I would buy them a t-shirt because that’s what I do. Next, we go across the street to Funko Hollywood and check out the new merch. Funko Hollywood is like a free little amusement park and there you can find collectibles and bobbleheads of some of your favorite celebs and pop culture icons. You can also make a custom one for yourself and yeah, we are doing that too.
After all that shopping and fun it’s time for a snack. So we would head over to Magnolia Boulevard in Burbank for some amazing cupcakes at Yummy Cupcakes, Yes, it is right there in the name – YUMMY! They offer non-vegan, vegan, gluten-free cupcakes and other bakery items and tasty drinks like the famous, invented in Los Angeles, Shirley Temple, named after the child actress.
Next stop? We are going to Geeky Teas on Magnolia Blvd in Burbank for some backroom antics, Dungeons and Dragons, and games. There is a minimal charge to play any board game on the shelf at this store and it is so much fun. There are tons of surprises at Geeky Teas, including a Dr. Who phone booth outside by the entrance and a room set up as Joyce Byers living room in Stranger Things.
OK, I know my guest is tired but we can’t end the day without delicious and healthy food. So we would pick up some sushi on San Fernando Blvd in Burbank at one of my favorite places, Kabuki Japenese Restaurant. If it is summer we would head over to Griffith Park for some Shakespeare in the Park produced by the Independent Shakespeare Co. If not, we’d grab a movie at AMC Burbank, take a picture with the Batman statue out front, and sip on a frozen ICEE while we watch the latest release.
Repeat the next day with different stops and more favorite restaurants. My guest will not be doing much sleeping.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family supports me 100% and I appreciate what they do to make everything happen for me.
