We had the good fortune of connecting with Samy Sabh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Samy, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
That when the easy route presents itself, don’t go down it.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I front a Chicago-based outfit called Bonelang. My partner, Matt Bones, and myself have been making music together for 17 years. Bonelang serves as the hub for my creative output. I write and produce music alongside Matt. I write and direct videos released in tandem with the music. I write screenplays and poetry. We’re prolific creators operating out of a home studio in Albany Park (Chicago’s northwest side). We’ve been sitting on a deep well of music, so in 2021, we have been releasing a tune every two weeks. We have an album that we’re hanging on to and a short film in pre-production.

Challenges: We’ve had money dangled in front of us like a carrot a number of times. We’ve learned every financial lesson in this game the hard way. At this point we’ve made almost every mistake you can make but have been fortunate and driven enough to turn those failures into lessons. Failure forces you into a corner and makes you learn how to do everything yourself. Learning not to rely on ANYONE has been a gift. Your functionality as a creator needs to span far wider then art-making itself with how things move today. Failure, when paired with passion, will widen that functionality. It should make you hungrier.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the before times I’d hang out at Sleeping Village a lot. A great little venue in Avondale. I enjoyed going to Constellation and the Hideout to see some left of center stuff; performance artists, dancers, musicians. One time I saw this dude pee in a bucket while these two other dudes sucked grapefruit juice through each other’s white t-shirts while a woman narrated the whole thing with 18th century English poetry. It was lit.

I’d go to Violet Hour quite a bit for cocktails. Drink a PBR at Cole’s in Logan Square. Watch a movie at the Music Box.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My partner Matt Bones. Our fellow bandmates Zack Marks and Andrew Lawrence. Our agent Brandon Hughes. My collaborators Chris Kas and Dakota Stroud.
