We had the good fortune of connecting with Sarah Dusek and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, what makes you happy? Why?
I experience my greatest happiness when I am making progress on fulfilling my dreams and visions. When I’m working on things I care about, am advancing the vision and mission that is in my heart I am definitely my happiest.
What should our readers know about your business?
My current passion is Enygma Ventures – a Venture Capital fund focused on investing in female entrepreneurs in Southern Africa. Enygma was born out of my passion for Africa and my own frustrations as a female founder trying to raise capital in the US to grow and scale my business. The lack of access to finance as a female founder and the challenges around fair capital were obstacles I’m bumped up against constantly. In the US just 2% of all venture funding goes to women and in Africa only 1% of the total Venture capital deployed in the US is deployed across the whole African continent. There is an enormous finance gap that keeps women and the African continent left behind. In 2019 after successfully scaling and exiting my own business I knew it was time to do something to address these inequalities and so Enygma Ventures was born. Today we are the only venture firm focused on investing in women across the region. We are helping women scale their businesses, creating access to funding and enabling women to dream, dreams they had not dared to dream before. We are proud to be working hard everyday to level the playing field by empowering talented women to reach for the stars.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m currently based down in Cape Town where we work with women across the region and Cape Town is an extraordinary city to explore. Combining incredible mountains, and amazing beaches this city is unparalleled in beauty. To top it off the city also boosts an incredible wine region with beautiful vineyards to be explored – so to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the sun go down after a long day is an utter treat!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m so very thankful for the very many other women who have gone before me in history who have paved the way for me to be successful and who also made it possible for me to have an education, be able to vote, sit in the board room, be a CEO. Without their efforts in their time, I would not be where I am today. I’m also very thankful for the many friends, colleagues and investors who have cheered me on in my journey, believed in me, backed me, encouraged me and caught my vision and journeyed with me. Without the collective efforts of many, my achievements and dreams would also not have come to life.
