We had the good fortune of connecting with Saverio SAGE Principini and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Saverio SAGE, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have pretty much always been an independent self employed individual, I don’t think I have held any position ever in a corporate company, so for me starting my own business was kind of logical and natural… first it was the production company with international musician casting and executive production for the recording industry and consequently the recording studio with the music production company. I wanted the freedom to work my own hours and pick and choose projects, wanted the freedom of creativity, although when you get hired as a producer you have to be open to the thoughts and choices of the artist you are working with and of course the label executives…
It sure is a big lap of faith in investing money into your own business but I think it paid off in the long run.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am sort of in between being a full creative person as a songwriter and producer and being a business person as a recording studio owner. I think what makes Speakeasy Studios LA special is that I built it for myself, I pretty much did 100% of my work in there for the first few years, so I wanted it to be cozy, relaxing and at the same time technically advanced so I could make records at the highest level of quality.
It wasn’t until later that artists and labels expressed interest in coming to work here on their own, I think Ricky Martin was one of the first clients and the Lonely Island who lived here and created and recorded for several months. So this place is not your typical commercial recording studio, this is a one of a kind experience… write, record, then go upstairs and have an incredible lunch, jump in the pool, record some more, sit outside by the fire place and look at LA from above… go to sleep in one of our cozy bedrooms, wake up and do it all over again… kinda artist retreat !
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well pre-covid I used to go for breakfast to Little Dom, Figaro or All Time, I pretty much love cooking and so I don’t do often dinner out but Covell’s was a great spot for an aperitif or after dinner hang… Alcove can be also a great meeting place, I sure miss Mother Dough… wish it was still around… also I used to go pretty much every weekend to get a drink or two at La Descarga and see my uber talented wife, Carolina Cerisola, dance her Burlesque show with the amazing live band of Willie McNeil… After Covid we will see… lots of of the habits have changed…
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think I own much to my business partner Vasco Rossi who believed in my vision from the start and offered the beautiful location of his house to make it happen. The house has this amazing 1930 Speakeasy, a real prohibition time hidden bar at the bottom of a gorgeous Old Hollywood villa, so it was amazing to transform it in a creative space where people can write and record music at any time. Also I need to give a big shoutout to my buddies Simone Sello and Marco Sonzini. Simone is an amazingly talented musician and for more than 20 years has believed and supported every musical journey I have ventured in and pretty much recorded in every song I have ever written and produced, he did it when there was no money, no budget, just because he believed in what I was going for, I think it really paid off in when we got our first number one hit, I think we realized the whole journey made sense and finally made cents !
Last but not least I wanna give a shoutout to Marco Sonzini who came in as an intern after graduating at the LA Recording school, over the course of 10 years he became my right hand in the studio and put his heart and soul in implementing it and up keeping it, we built together all kind of gear and done tons of work together – now he has grown to be a very successful producer, engineer and mixer and he has his own clientele.
