We had the good fortune of connecting with Shannon Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shannon, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have a daughter who was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy a disease with no cure at age 3. By age 11 she lost her ability to walk. I had to constantly take off work for doctor visits and hospital stays. I love to cook so I started a seasoning and spice business which allows me to be flexible. I can make sure I don’t miss appointments and I can attend therapy and OT with my other daughter. I can also take them to work with me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my business with just a thought. I had no money or no resources. I knew what I wanted to do but I didn’t know how to make it tangible. I started watching youtube and googling about spices and seasonings. I came out with a chicken and fish breading line and I had a business reveal party to show my friends and family what I was working on. It was not easy especially being a single mother of 3. I would drop my kids off at daycare go to work and do research on my down time. I picked my kids up did homework with them cooked and got them ready for bed. I would stay up all night researching and writing things down. I even started a youtube cooking page and I started sending my breadings all over the world. I only had about 30 youtube subscribers so I researched and joined facebook food groups. One day I was tired and put together a meal which was steak and shrimp teriyaki noodles. I put it in the food group and when I woke up I was viral I now have over 15 thousand youtube subscribers. You really have to put the work in. Nothing works unless you work it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my friends come to town we just go to a nice restaurant because I love nice restaurants it’s just my thing. We may go to 1818 chophouse or Bait. I like to walk the strip on washington as well or go to the taste of saint louis.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shout out to one of my best friends Betty. I was in a dark place and she helped me and encouraged me to get out. So many times I thought my life was over but she prayed for me and checked on me and held me accountable. She never gave up on me.
