We had the good fortune of connecting with Shekinah Garner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shekinah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Passion is the most important factor! Without passion your work loses value, because passion fuels drive, inspiration, the hunger. Fortunately I found a career early on that I’m still Passionate about today, seventeen years later. I can work on skin all day and then go home and watch videos, and read about advances in the industry or different methods of doing things. I’m endlessly fascinated and inspired by all things skincare.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I know some Aestheticians start their own practices right out of school, and others (like myself) work for employers for years before taking that leap. I know it’s taken me a very long time to get to the point where I finally feel ready to open my own Spa, but I wouldn’t change anything about the path that brought me to this point. It was definitely full of challenges, but I now see those as blessings! Working for demanding bosses that don’t understand your vision, see your talent, or even really understand the impact you can make is very hard. I’ve had great jobs working this field, jobs where I excelled, and others where I was limited. I’m thankful for all of the experiences I’ve had because they have taught me so much about what I want and don’t want for my own business. They have made me sensitive to certain things, but tough in a way that’s resilient and wise from experience. I’m proud of that.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I come from a small town in Montana called Whitefish, and it couldn’t be more different than Los Angeles! I love LA, and can’t imagine living anywhere else. This city is full of amazing people, places to shop, dine, hike, relax, and be entertained. When friends visit I love to take them to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills which is iconic, right? Love The Ivy for lunch, art galleries in downtown, and shopping on Melrose. Hollywood has a piece of my heart, even though it’s not what most people expect. The glamour is still there, even though it’s run down and dirty. You really cant help but see the many dreams that have come here to die, and that’s tragic yet motivating, reminding you to to rise up even if you feel failure knocking To not let the twenty “no’s” you get keep you from chasing that one “yes” that could change your life.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My sister inspires me so much! She joined the beauty industry not long ago, but has far surpassed me in her following online, and has created a space in the plasma lift community that is artistic and technical in ways that it never was before. I’m so proud of her! Follow her, her name is Shariyah Morris and can be found at @proudbrow
