We had the good fortune of connecting with Susan Ateh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Susan, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Happiness to me is a choice, something I have to decide and commit to it daily. I derive a lot of joy from being of service, availing of my strengths, my ability to hold space for others so they can process, move through emotional blocks, stress and most of all return home to themselves. It’s such a beautiful experience to witness someone falling in love with themselves and feeling empowered.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart is my life story. Staying in my own lane despite social pressures to fit in. It’s not easy, and a lot of times in my life I would compare and judge myself – It was a painful process but one I’m grateful I went through because I rose above it and I’m proud that I don’t really adhere to those pressures anymore. It’s something I’m always working on, to stay in touch with my heart space and be guided by it. I approach my business by being as honest and as authentic as I can. I’m constantly learning and evolving and never pretend to have all the answers. I think people respond to truth, people respond to matters of the heart. Lessons I have learned along the way is patience, that it’s okay to not have all the answers. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. A big lesson I went through was realising that just because it feels easy doesn’t mean you’re not working hard enough. When you love your work it feels easy.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The beauty of LA is lies in it’s diversity how there is to experience in one city. I would start with a trip to Silver Lake and have a great brunch at “Squirl,” a great neighbourhood restaurant, and take in some vintage stores. I love exploring downtown, take a trip to my favourite bookstore ‘ The last book store’ and walk through Grand Central Market, with so many wonderful foods from all over the world as well as a visit to the ‘The Broad Museum” Hiking is one my favourites things to do in Los Angeles, I’m a nature lover. There are beautiful hiking trails in the palisades that I love to explore with ocean views. Venice is a must when a friends visits me – taking in the people, window shopping along the famous Abott Kinney Boulevard – For dinner we would go “The Rose” in Venice. In the summer I would have to take them to a concert at the “The Hollywood Bowl”, one of my favourite memories in LA – open air concert, you bring your own picnic – the atmosphere is electric ‘ Afternoon tea at “The Hutington Gardens” and time in the gardens is an afternoon well spent. “Harriet’s Rooftop Bar” is great place to catch the sunset sip on a delicious cocktail. The energy gets an uplift when Legendary Damon hosts his famous gatherings.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success very much stems from the incredible network of friends I am very lucky to surround myself with. Having Women you can rely on, that hold you in challenging and successful times is one the best gifts I have been given in this lifetime.
