We had the good fortune of connecting with Taji Hathcock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Taji, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I grew up as an recoding artist, still am an artist and one of my biggest challenges was always studio time. Being able to get your music mixed and having a place to work at consistently is one of the biggest factors for anyone to make music. Before I ever started my studio I just wanted to be able to record my self and make it sound good. Once I figured it all out me and my business partner, Vince Pates wanted to have a recording studio where artist can afford to come to work on their craft at a reasonable price. I always try to look at as if I were a costumer looking for studio time what would I want out of the service and apply that though process to my business.
As for LFTCST Media we started wit making our own music videos and as we gained knowledge in other areas of production started to build a team that can make content in all different areas. S/o my directors Donovan Johnson and Justin Childress some of the best young minds in the LA Film scene. I think the thought process behind the production was entirely experimental with the LAUSD Podcast. We had some cameras and people we knew around us started planning out some content and it really just worked honestly. I think our team has a unique understanding of everyones strengths and weaknesses and we’re able to just work and hold each other accountable.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Most people know me for my studio and the LAUSD Podcast, but I’m most excited to start dropping all this music I’ve been working on with all the artist and producers across the city. My art is a little different because I keep things a little soulful I guess lol I don’t know. Also I’m the person mixing the music and I kind of get to put my own final and finishing touches on everything so its a little different. Getting to where I am today professionally honestly took time and work on m craft. It’s not easy trying to build a foundation when you’re creating its kind of usually you just put shit out and see what works. I’m lucky to be working in so many different fields that I kind of had time to let my music I’m going to drop come together organically and un-rushed. This is not something I put together in a month, its years of growth as a song-writer, producer, as well as the mixing I’m doing.
I’m looking forward to releasing my comic book I made last year. Its called Element the Alchemist about a super-hero from Los Angeles, follow the Kickstarter i’m droppping the coic at 50 followers and follow the instagram (@elementhealchemist)
My biggest challenge I’ve had is just putting myself in the right direction and not being distracted. When you’re young in the city and you see all these things ahead of you it’s all fun. Then you get a little older and see things that are behind you and you kind of want to just focus on the most important things and leave your mark on the world.
I want people to know my brand is 100% about being yourself and being comfortable in your own skin. All my music, content, and podcast is about just being you and not getting caught up in society standards. People who know me will always say Taji is just Taji that simple.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If i ever had someone visiting the city and they had like 2 days?? Sheesh first I’ma bring them early morning workout maybe Temescal Canyon in the Palisades see the view city, beach all that. My favorite food spots in the city I gotta go with: Versailles, Tev’s Kitchen. In-N-Out, Lucys Tacos late night it all depends I’ma real foodie. As for nightlife maybe take them to Ace Hotel on a Friday night. Maybe a mansion party then after you never know with big T lmao. Then as far as shopping maybe just hit Melrose, Kith, or Leimert Park. LA is honestly infinite its always somewhere to go or something to do.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father for one I have to give a big shoutout because I kind of just have an entrepreneur thought process ad work ethic from him. He always wanted me to do music kept me in studios when I was young so he kind of built me for this. Also just my team though big shoutout to everybody thats apart of what we’re building because none of the stuff I’m doing would really even be possible without them so once again S/o Donovan Johnson (@donymac) and Justin Childress (@Jcfilms__). Also the whole team Semaje Stinson, Bob Coleman, Ariel Janeil (@arieljaneill) and Robert Brown.
