We had the good fortune of connecting with Teressa Foglia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teressa, how do you think about risk?
I took a hat-making course for fun while I was in Europe in the summer of 2016, and it led me to switch careers entirely. I’ve loved hats my entire life and thought the course would be a fun escape from my former career as a social media consultant. After strangers started asking to purchase hats right off my head, I knew I had something special. When I started my brand in December 2017, I had never worked in fashion, retail, or millinery, but I knew I had a passion for creating something one of a kind. I think that going after something with no experience gave me a fresh look at an industry that was struggling with an old model. In a world obsessed with online shopping and two-day shipping, we’ve decided to focus on developing experiential retail locations. We focus on creating relationships with our clients rather than mass-producing the same hat over and over. In essence, we’re finding that there’s success in taking risks in creating custom hats, or as we like to call it, “Big Hat Magic.”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For the past decade or so, my career has gone in so many different directions. I was a social media consultant and completely burnt out. And then I got dumped! I took that as a sign from the universe to take some time to heal and recoup. I booked a one-way ticket to Europe, stayed for a year, took a hat-making course in France, and then returned to New York to restart life. It sounds so simple when you write it down, but there were definitely times I doubted myself, times I thought this was all going to fail catastrophically, but I learned along the way, worked insanely hard, and surrounded myself with the best people I could find.

Our team, vision, and clients set us apart. We have a team that supports us so strongly that we’re able to focus on bringing something beautiful to life that matches our client’s aesthetic. We sustainably source all of our materials, which makes our hats truly one of a kind because you can’t plan out the materials in advance or replicate something. We also love doing crazy and unique things like lighting hats on fire! Putting on a Teressa Foglia hat makes you feel powerful and confident. When you wear one of our hats, you know you’re wearing something special.

Right now, we are so excited about Texas! We just left a two-week road trip with stops in Austin, Round Top, Houston, and Dallas. We’re totally overwhelmed by the support and designed some of the most extraordinary hats we’ve ever made. We have a massive community in Texas, and it was incredible to meet so many people that we’ve been designing virtually with over the years. Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
You have to stay at the Surfrider Hotel in Malibu. It’s an old 1950’s motel converted into the most luxe, coolest boutique hotel. It’s impeccably decorated and looks like the beach house you’ve always dreamed of owning. Quintessential California! Walking around Malibu Country Mart and discovering new things at all my favorite stores is one of my favorite activities and a total must-do. Our atelier is right next door to Fred Segal, so I’m always popping in there to see what’s going on. Canvas is my favorite place to shop- so many cool clothes and they have an amazing gallery space as well. I love Taverna Tony’s for dinner. All of their dips are fantastic and so is the Greek salad. And of course, getting picantes at Little Beach House is a staple! The best part about Malibu is being outside by the water, so taking a surf lesson or doing a picnic on the beach is definitely a must.
