We had the good fortune of connecting with Tevyn Cole and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tevyn, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I believe my journaling has been a habit that has brought success. I use my journal to write down my small wins and the things I am grateful for that day. I also will write out short term goals. It feels good to check things off. It’s a habit that puts me in a good mindset and is a frequent reminder that I am doing better than I sometimes think.

I also have a habit of using my calendar. For me, the more organized I am, the more I am able to get shit done.

Lastly, it might seem completely unrelated but, I make sure I maintain healthy eating habits. I notice that my work like is thriving when I’m taking better care of my body.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Dance means so much to me and being able to share it with others is something I will never take for granted. My work has inspiration from the 70’s. 80’s and 90’s. I love music that can take you back in time. It’s more fun for me when I create that way.

I am really proud of my class here in LA. The dancers inspire me so much. Some of them have been training with me for a few years and we’ve become this cool little dance family. Seeing dancers perform my choreography will always be one of the most magical feelings. To see how they can learn something and add their own special sauce to it always gives me butterflies.

I am also so excited about the artists I have worked with and the ones I am currently working with. Any musician that comes to me for choreography excites me because all of the musicians who have inspired me over the years are the ones who loved to dance. Putting movement on an artist and having them put their trust in me, is an honor no matter how famous they may or may not be.

It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today. Moving to LA to pursue this dream really tested my strength and patience. I learned that I needed to sacrifice a few things to truly make things work. I overcame the challenges by finding a solid group of friends and teachers. Success is never achieved completely alone. It’s all of the people along the way that are adding to our recipe of success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is so big that I am still finding new spots! But I loveeeee to visit Catalina Island and Malibu. Paradise Cove in Malibu is one of my fave spots! Some of my fave food places around the valley are El Cocineros, HOPE, Rustic Spoon, Something Vegan and Joan’s on Third. Hiking Fryman trail is always a chill hike that I like to go on with friends. I especially love getting out of town to places like Palm Springs and Three Rivers. Oh and before I forget, you have to check out my cousin’s restaurant in LA. Jackfruit Cafe! All vegan soul food!! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is definitely a person who means so much in my journey. I had originally moved out to LA for a mentorship with celebrity choreographer Andre Fuentes. After training under him for about a year and a half, he suddenly passed. It was very unexpected. I felt very lost and unsure what to do next or where my journey would lead without Andre in the picture. It was my friend Mikeal Jinae who first suggested that I start teaching dance classes. Mikeal made me feel capable. She supported me and encouraged me to keep going. I am so thankful for her. If it wasn’t for beginning my own dance classes at that time, I’m not sure where I would be today. I dedicate my shoutout to Mikeal!
