We had the good fortune of connecting with TJay Weekes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi TJay, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
When I was younger, I tried the more traditional job roles because they came accross as the only viable career options in life. Although i’m now in a creative career, I’m glad I had those experiences, as they were the fuel that launched me into the creative sector. I was fortunate enough to see other freelancers live out their dreams and decided to follow suit, as it was now a viable option in my mind.
I always said to myself, I should at least try it and if it doesn’t work out, at least I won’t have the regret. Fortunately for me it did.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would say that i’m proud of how far i’ve come purely by myself. I took the initiative to start something, and although it’s still in it’s infancy, I’m proud of the progress made so far.
I find that every job is a new learning curve, becasue the product or service i’m advertising is different, the people are different, the concept is different. This means you’re always adapting to a new type of environment or person . This in turn helps you change certain parts of your business as you go along. Whether it’s how you deal with clients or how you set up a shoot.
In any business you’ll have challenges, and at the time they’re not pleasant, but afterwards, you realise how they may have been necessary to make you and your business better in the long run.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the sky garden in london, as I think thats the best view of the city. Go to see some live music at a live night where you can see some of London best musicians and singers perform. We’d go to the arcade and get some authentic food from different nationalities at their respective restaurants.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There wasn’t really one person or organisation that directly led to my career, but more of a combination of friends, family, colleagues, youtubers etc creating an influence on me. I tend to take everything I learn from people as a whole and focus that into a particular decision, theory or ethos. I’m very analytical in that way, which I think has been a helpful attribute in my career. I learn a lot from talking to and observing others generally in life.
