We had the good fortune of connecting with TU Leonardo Antinori & Giorgi Antinori and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi TU, how do you think about risk?
The way we see it, risk is always involved in life and business and is something that we should be ok assessing and taking at most times. In the worst case if it doesn’t work out after taking the risk at least you learn from it, so you really can’t lose. If you think about it, everytime you get on a plane you risk going down but how often do you actually go down? Most often you do reach your destination. Same in life, with diligence, persistence hope and passion the risks you take usually get you there. The risk of putting your art out there in the face of being rejected or not appreciated is nothing compared to the journey you’d miss out on if you don’t take the risk to begin with. We feel the art and the true passion for something will ultimately find it’s audience. We’ve had to take many risks in our life together and in our career. Career-wise, from signing with a label to eventually leaving that label, going completely independent and also opening a commercial recording studio in Santa Monica Ca (www.NewVineMusic.com). We also risked by changing our band name and brand from “GIORGI+LEO” to “TU” ( www.TUmusicofficial.com ) and self funding all our releases, music videos and promotion. But before this even, the risk of foregoing the “security” of a 9 to 5 job many years ago for creative endeavors, has turned out to be a great decision to begin with. Creating art for a living that people then get to enjoy is rewarding. We are growing what we want to grow, our music, the business and enjoying the process doing what we love to do.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, we are married! There aren’t many married artists or acts out there, so that automatically sets us apart when we meet people or new fans. We are also bilingual (English/Spanish) so that’s different as well. People used to immediately think of Sunny and Cher which is really funny, but we are definitely in 2020 and have a much more latin edge. We actually have a new single coming out at the end of September that we are excited about called “Baila” and the music video will be pretty fun too featuring some dancers . But yea, we are excited. When we met we were both pursuing music and we just fell in love and started creating together. Eventually we got involved with a record label from London and started traveling all over the place to write. We’ve even won International song writing contests together which is fun, and if we are honest it was a good ego boost for us….the music industry can be tough. The most challenging part of all of it is that everyone has an opinion, and often times those opinions can be derailing. One of the greatest lessons we have learned is we can’t please everyone and we have to be mindful of who we surround ourselves with. It took a few years to really learn that, eventually you just get so overwhelmed by all the voices, that you shut them all up. So now we have a recording studio in Santa Monica (www.newvinemusic.com) where we write and produce everything apart from other artists that we really love to work with and bounce ideas off of. Living in LA is great for that. Everyone is pretty much in entertainment so you can always be creating something. Leo is also always working on something new for us or producing/writing for other artists or the TV/Film catalog. We just released a single and music video called “Summertime” and we brought our film friends, dancers, musicians and just went all over DTLA and filmed it. It was amazing. Can you believe that music video was shot days before Covid lockdown? Crazy times. Next week the music video for “Baila” is being filmed so there will be something new for everyone to watch, hopefully cheer people up some during these crazy times (https://www.TUmusicofficial.com). “Baila” will be released on 9/25/20 so don’t forget to add it to your Spotify playlists.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
LA is one of the greatest foodie cities! We’d probably spend most of our time at restaurants, food trucks and the beach. One of us is gluten free so we’d definitely go to Breadblok for all of our GF needs, they have the BEST gluten free croissants and prosciutto baguette. Since LA is such a morning town with great breakfasts and coffee we’d definitely take them to “The Place To Be” on Main Street in Santa Monica for the BEST real deal croissants and crepes and then grab a coffee at Urth Cafe or Intelligentsia. Oh man there are literally so many amazing places to eat, Gjusta is at the top for its ambience and great food, Milo SRO has some of the best pizza. No trip to LA is complete with out several taco runs and every taco is different but Tacos y Birria La Unica is one we’ve been wanting to try so we’d definitely go there! If we wanted something more upscale, Redbird in DTLA has incredible food and cocktails. We’ve been in lockdown so long, its hard to remember what we used to do for fun in the city but Circle Bar had the best dancing, it was super casual and kind of small, but the people there are great and everyone was there to have a great time. Live games! remember those!? What a bummer, there are so many great teams in LA to watch. Since we can’t gather in large crowds, we’ll console ourselves with ice cream. Fatamorgana in Beverly Hills has drool worthy gelato and if our friend happened to be Vegan, The Fruit Co in Santa Monica, OR the chocolate chip cookie and vegan vanilla ice cream at Cafe Gratitude. We’d have so many beach days, It’s kind of the only place you can be right now so Surfrider, Escondido and even Santa Monica are where it’s at. For our grand foodie finale we’d send our friend home with a Godmother Sandwich from Bay Cities.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d like to shoutout to our family, friends who’ve supported us in our personal walk and have consistently encouraged us to keep going.
