We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Dunn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, what inspires you?
I am inspired by movement. Any kind, anywhere, by any means. We were created to move. Our body, mind and spirit feel best when we can create clear flowing channels of energy within and without us. Movement allows us to experience our full potential. Currently I am hiking the Continental Divide Trail – 3,100 miles from Mexico to Canada. Living outside, trekking through some of the most beautiful and remote land in the US. The entire trek will take close to six months to complete. My journey began at the Mexico border in the boot-heel of New Mexico in the Chihuahua desert. I am currently 1100 miles in, half way through Colorado, high in the Rocky Mountains . Moving through the land, connecting with nature is so therapeutic, and allows me to reconnect with my soul, my creativity, my curiosity, and my strength!
Tony Robbins often talks about the importance of our physical body, “ when you strengthen our body you change your emotions and if you change your emotions you change your decisions and therefore change the quality of your life.”
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think of my work as my seva. “Seva” is a Sanskrit word meaning “service” often associated with the principles of yoga. It is an expression of compassion for others and a genuine desire to uplift those around you. And that is the mission behind ‘Flow with Vanessa.’ I believe through movement we can uplift and energize our mind, body and spirit and ultimately create a better world. Movement has always been a huge part of my life, it has given me purpose, fulfillment, and direction, and sharing my passion with others is a true gift. Turning my passion into a business has come with it’s challenges, but it also has unleashed a sense of freedom and creativity that can be hard to come by in today’s society. Paving your own path can be an uphill battle but the rewards are equal to the effort.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What a glorious city we live in, even through the pandemic I was counting my blessing to be in LA. Getting outside is always the remedy, so when I have friends visiting that’s exactly what we do. A hike around Runyon Canyon, the best of both worlds – Sunsets and Sunset Blvd. Definitely a show at The Hollywood Bowl; listening to the symphony or watching dance in the open air; life is always beautiful at the Bowl. A bike ride and dip in the ocean. A sound bath in the Malibu hills, with a stop by the Lake Shrine at the Self-Realization Fellowship in the Palisade’s where a portion of Ghandhi’s ashes are enshrined.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When I shift the focus off myself and on to others my energy began to expand exponentially. I firmly believe every person that comes into my life is here to teach me something. And with that in mind, I am so grateful for my clients that continue to push me, inspire me to continue learning, and open my eyes and mind to different possibilities. The people we surround ourselves with play a huge role in the way we navigate life. I also have to give a huge Shoutout to my partner, my rock and forever cheerleader who has pushed me to think bigger and live louder.
