We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Duran and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, how does your business help the community?
Small businesses truly form the fabric of our local communities. Our local shopping districts help preserve our communities’ sense of identity and uniqueness. My goal with DCC Accounting & Business Consulting is to bring access to financial services that are more common in the corporate world. This ensures small business owners are empowered with the financial savviness to help their local business thrive, while maintaining our neighborhood charm. One of my cornerstone personal beliefs is that entrepreneurship is one of the main drivers for wealth creation. Entrepreneurship at all levels allows individuals to rise above what is and create something new. From family businesses who sustain entire families and use their business derived income to send their kids to college to unicorn startups creating thousands of new jobs every year. Our integrated suite of services is designed to empower business owners to make decisions and help them drive growth and to avoid costly mistakes that, in many situations, can mean a business might have to shut down. By supporting small businesses in the path to growing and scaling their business, we impact their customers, suppliers, employees, and the communities they are part of and help shape.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
DCC Accounting exists because we are inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of small business owners, individuals who chose their independence and passionately guide their own success. What makes us most excited and highly committed is making corporate-level accounting and financial expertise available to small businesses everywhere. Early in my career, I lived in New York where I consulted publicly traded companies on capital markets. It was exciting working closely with the Investor Relations team for publicly traded domestic and international companies such as: Domino’s Pizza, Popeyes Chicken, France Telecom and Merck, to help drive value to their stock. Now, in Los Angeles, Miami and New York, I am fulfilling my dream working with local restaurants, coffee shops, flower shops, wholesalers, from businesses looking to be small giants to small businesses on their path to scale. We work hard to be part of the ecosystem necessary for our small community business to thrive. This brings unique local character that only small businesses can do. It impacts our success stories, tourism and more.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love this part because, even though Miami is my home base, I am in LA a lot, and I get to stay with my childhood best friend while in town. Our itinerary usually includes Beverly Hills, a Walk around Rodeo Drive, and lunch at Sugarfish. We also try to fit going for coffee and dessert to the rooftop at the Waldorf Astoria and dinner at Il Pastaio. On day 2, we usually make it to Santa Monica to spend the afternoon at the beach. I love Shangri-La’s rooftop for watching the sunset. Usually, this is the part of the trip that I can’t compromise: looking for an excellent place to go after to watch the sunset. When time allows it, we try to make it to Malibu, taking PCH from Santa Monica all the way up the coast. I consider myself very lucky to hang with a full-time local with whom I share so much history.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have so many people inspire, encourage and support me and I wish I could mention them all. My family, both my mom and husband encouraged me to open my own business rather than going back to the corporate world after our first child who is now eleven years old. I had a very special high school teacher, college professors, bosses and now my team at DCC Accounting.
