Meet Weeda Aman | Founder & Executive Chef, Weeda’s Afghan Catering

We had the good fortune of connecting with Weeda Aman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Weeda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Weeda’s Afghan Catering out of a deep desire to share the authentic flavors and cultural richness of Afghan cuisine with people in Southern California and beyond. Growing up, Afghan food was always at the center of celebrations, family gatherings, and meaningful moments. I saw firsthand how food can bring people together and create lasting memories – and I wanted to build a business that brings that same warmth and connection to other people’s events.
When I first began planning Weeda’s Afghan Catering, my focus wasn’t just on preparing great food – it was about delivering an experience. Authentic dishes like Qabuli Palaw, Chicken Qorma, Badenjan Burani, and Kofta are full of heritage and tradition, and I wanted to present them with the same care and attention that you’d expect at a wedding, corporate event, or special celebration. The goal was to offer something that felt both elevated and soulful, bringing the heart of Afghan cuisine to people who might not otherwise have access to it.
Another big part of my thought process was the realization that many standard catering options lack genuine flavor and cultural storytelling. I knew there was an audience that wanted more than just “food on a plate” – they wanted authenticity, intention, and connection through cuisine. Starting my own business made it possible to fill that gap, create jobs, and build something that reflects both my heritage and my commitment to hospitality.
What drives me every day is seeing people’s reactions when they taste dishes they’ve never tried before, or when guests comment on how memorable the food was at an event. That’s the fulfillment I was seeking when I decided to build a business that celebrates Afghan culinary traditions while offering professional, dependable catering services.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Weeda’s Afghan Catering was built from a simple but powerful idea: to share the beauty, richness, and hospitality of Afghan culture through food. Afghan cuisine is deeply rooted in tradition, generosity, and community, and I wanted to create a business that reflects those values while delivering a premium, elevated catering experience.
What sets us apart is that we don’t just serve food – we create an experience. Every dish is prepared using time-honored family recipes, high-quality ingredients, and careful attention to presentation. From weddings and corporate events to intimate family gatherings, our goal is to make every event feel special and memorable. We bring warmth, elegance, and cultural storytelling to the table.
I’m most proud of building a brand that represents my heritage with dignity and pride. Afghan food is often misunderstood or unfamiliar to many people, and I love seeing guests experience it for the first time and fall in love with the flavors. Watching people connect over our food is what makes this work meaningful.
The journey to get here was not easy. Like many immigrant families, we started with very little and had to build everything from the ground up. Turning a passion into a professional business required learning new systems, navigating regulations, investing in training, and building confidence as an entrepreneur. There were moments of doubt, long nights, and many obstacles – but I stayed committed because I believed in the vision.
I overcame challenges by leaning on my family, staying disciplined, and never compromising on quality. I treated every event as an opportunity to build trust and reputation. Over time, that consistency created momentum.
The biggest lessons I’ve learned are that patience matters, integrity builds brands, and community is everything. Success doesn’t happen overnight – it’s built one client, one event, and one experience at a time.
What I want the world to know is that Weeda’s Afghan Catering is more than a business. It’s a story of culture, resilience, family, and pride. It’s about honoring where we come from while building something meaningful for the future. And most of all, it’s about bringing people together through food.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Southern California for a week, I would want them to experience the perfect mix of culture, food, ocean, shopping, and relaxation – the kind of trip where every day feels special and unforgettable.
Day 1 – Laguna Beach & Coastline Magic
We’d start with a walk through Laguna Beach, exploring the art galleries and coves, then have lunch overlooking the ocean at a beachfront café. In the evening, we’d watch the sunset at Heisler Park and enjoy a beautiful dinner nearby with ocean views.
Day 2 – Newport Beach & Balboa Island
A full beach day in Newport Beach – renting bikes along the boardwalk, relaxing by the water, and taking the ferry to Balboa Island for famous frozen bananas and waterfront strolling. Dinner would be at a harbor restaurant watching the boats come in.
Day 3 – Beverly Hills & Hollywood
We’d spend the day shopping on Rodeo Drive, walking through Beverly Hills, and stopping for lunch at a chic café. In the evening, we’d explore Hollywood, see the Walk of Fame, and maybe catch a rooftop dinner with city views.
Day 4 – Malibu & Santa Monica
A scenic drive up the coast to Malibu for lunch by the ocean, followed by sunset at Santa Monica Pier – rides, beach walks, and people-watching. Dinner would be somewhere lively near the beach.
Day 5 – Downtown LA & Culture Day
We’d explore The Broad Museum, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and grab lunch at Grand Central Market. Then a rooftop drink downtown and maybe a live show or concert at night.
Day 6 – Irvine & Orange County Favorites
A relaxed day with shopping at South Coast Plaza, coffee at a cute café, and a spa afternoon. In the evening, we’d go somewhere fun and social for dinner and drinks.
Day 7 – Family, Food & Home Hospitality
I’d finish the trip the Afghan way – cooking a big homemade meal, inviting family and friends, and hosting a beautiful gathering at home. Food, laughter, music, and connection – the best ending.
Southern California is special because you can have the ocean, mountains, shopping, art, and food all in one week. The people, the energy, and the lifestyle make it exciting and inspiring. For me, the most fun experiences are always centered around great food, beautiful scenery, and meaningful time with people you love.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate my shoutout to my mom and the generations of women before me who carried our culinary traditions forward with love, patience, and pride. Afghan cooking is not just about recipes – it’s about hospitality, generosity, and creating a sense of home wherever you are. I learned that in the kitchen, watching my mother, aunts, and elders prepare meals for large family gatherings, celebrations, and guests.
I also want to recognize the Afghan community, whose support and encouragement gave me the confidence to turn a passion into a business. Their belief in preserving our culture and sharing it with the world is what inspired me to build Weeda’s Afghan Catering.
And finally, a special shoutout to my husband and children, whose constant support, sacrifices, and belief in my vision made this journey possible. Every step of this business is built on their love and encouragement.
This business is truly a reflection of all of them.
