Our community is made up of brilliant artists, creatives and entrepreneurs, but many of them are also dedicated parents and so we asked them an in port at question: If you are a parent, what do you think is the most important thing you’ve done as a parent in terms of the impact on your children?

I have four sons, ages 37, 27, and two 19-year old twins. The biggest thing I have done that has had a positive impact on my children is doing my own work to resolve my issues from childhood and breaking the negative cycles of generational dysfunction. When my oldest two were growing up, I still had unresolved issues from my own childhood that overly influenced how I parented. For example, I was extremely unhappy as a child…sometimes even suicidal. Spending as much time as possible with them and having quality time when we are together, instilling values in them, so that they are good citizens and that they feel the love I have for them. From the moment I knew I was pregnant with my first child, I was told by a good friend to always show your children who you are. Most people say things like, before you were born I was doing this, that and the other. Not me, anytime I have the opportunity to take my kids to my gigs they will be there dancing and waving at me while I’m DJing. It’s the greatest gift to show my girls that under any circumstance, Mama will remain resilient and persist to continue to do what she loves. I can’t say I do it all by myself. The partnership with my husband is also a big factor of impact for our kids. We all work as a team and I truly wouldn’t be able to do half the things without my husband.
