We had the good fortune of connecting with Serra Isik and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Serra, what role has risk played in your life or career?
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” — Anais Nin This quote probably the best thing to describe how we approach risk taking. We took a big risk when we leave our life behind in Turkey and came to Los Angeles with just enough money, thrill and lots of dreams. We try to concentrate on what we do best and in our case that is creating, designing and rethinking stuff. This new choice brought a lot of risks and rewards in our lives. Finding gems behind closed doors, trying to learn a new culture, getting used to a new lifestyle, constantly speaking a language that is not your mother tongue, try to create a new business in a new city/country, finding new friends after 30 and lots of random ups & downs that you can’t even think of. But in the end, it’s all worth it. Because if you can’t take a risk now, then when? Every change brings you one step closer to yourself. That’s why if you are in the quest of living your life fully and unapologetically, then take a risk and enjoy the road.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Soi Studio is a Los Angeles based Design & Vintage Clothing and Handmade Accessories studio run by a wife & husband duo. As Soi Studio, we have two different approaches to creating new pieces to the fashion world. First, we design, handmade and create small batches of new products in our studio. We love designing fun pieces that put a quirky smile on people’s faces! We love colors, mixing modern & traditional pieces, irresponsible mottos, and minimal design perspective. Secondly, as a part of our sustainable approach to the fashion world, we also offer curated vintage items that are carefully handpicked by us through piles of unique used clothing. After we find our gems, we return them to life by cleaning, repairing and modernizing. We’re recovering value and reducing waste with our eco-friendly approach. Every item we bring back to life reflects our aesthetic. It’s not easy to start a small business that wants to be sustainable. Because as a small business owner, you try to fund your basic life needs and your business needs with one income if you choose to be self-employed. So the risk is out there and it is always big. When you start thinking about the pieces that make a business successful, you can get scared a little because of all the commitment and risks that you are taking. But we feel like life is risky even you took it or not so you should start the journey slowly and positively and don’t let yourself feel unsuccessful just because you couldn’t complete every task in your list in your planned timeline. Always try to learn from your mistakes and know that mistakes are really valuable in the business world because it makes you powerful after you learn from it.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If our friends from Turkey in town, we start with a big breakfast because it is really important for Turkish people to have a great breakfast in the morning. So probably we would start at a cafe or diner that we can choose based on the needs of the group. But Sunny Spot in Venice is always a good idea with their bottomless mimosas. After that, it would be probably beach time! A nice walk at Venice to Santa Monica, maybe a little cocktail at Shutters on the Beach or a beer at Venice Boardwalk cafe or Venice Whaler depends on the mood. Our favorite spot in LA is definitely Griffith Observatory. It’s always amazing in the day and night. If you are interested in to observe, ponder, and understand the sky, you should definitely take a visit. Also, it gives you an amazing view of Los Angeles skyline and when you go at night you can use the telescopes to see the moon and different planets, etc. Our favorite happy hour spot is Electric Owl at Sunset Blv. Their happy hour starts at 4.20pm and they have amazing cocktails, beers, and snacks that make you really happy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My life partner and co-creator Okan Isik is the person who deserves a lot of credit and recognition because our brand is a two-person operation and we are doing everything together. For a lot of people, it’s really hard to work with your spouse or your family because it’s so tricky to maintain a separate relationship when you live and work together. I can say we bud heads a lot but we managed to balanced it smoothly along the way and understand the importance of combining two different creative minds in a pot.
