We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyra Bouhamdan Vassallo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyra, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Freedom. I started my own business because I wanted the freedom to work from anywhere in the world, on my own terms, and with purpose. I always wanted to run my own organization and have a positive impact on the world. My communication agency, which stemmed from having freelanced as a translator and communication consultant on one hand, and as a sales and marketing agent on the other, just organically happened. It seemed that I would always say yes to communication opportunities where I felt the messages had a positive influence on people, culture and planet, and where I could make connections to somehow bring the world together. Starting out primarily working with community and not-for-profit organizations, then into the corporate media domain, I quickly realized that communication was the long-term path for me. I think when we work with passion for what we do and we know what we want, we can safely venture out into risk taking. All career paths require hard work, dedication and stamina. I had been giving all those things to the communities and companies I worked for, so it seemed to be a no-brainer to give them to my own organization. The difference is that in being my own boss, I would have more independent power and less red tape to bypass to make socially responsible decisions that I felt good about. For instance, I can hire diverse talent from all over the world and help to create a balance between rich and poor on the planet. I can choose to say no to projects that have a negative impact on the environment or to clients that don’t respect human rights. It seemed that if I took what I learned from the corporate and community worlds and applied them in the global community, that I could make a positive change in my own life and in the lives of others. Yes, there is a financial sacrifice involved, but the rewards come in a more balanced ways when calculating not only the currency of money, but also of time and happiness. This is why I started my own business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Laguna Beach is my jam. Ocean, arts and awesome culture makes this little gem the sanctuary of Orange County. My favorite spot is McClain Cellars, a family owned local winery with a beautiful, chill atmosphere and local flavor. I love the live music, great wine, friendly service and surrounding Sawdust Festival artsy vibe. With a lush diversity of art galleries, walking around the Laguna Village keeps your creative juices flowing, and the ocean and vibrant beaches keep the spirits calm and high. If I’m not on the Mediterranean, then the american riviera is the place to be and for me, Laguna is where it’s at!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Venturing out into business is never a solo journey. Mine could not have been possible without the support and conviction of those who believe in me. My husband Chris and our little angel, Joujou (our Maltese dog and eternal baby) give me the inspiration to wake up every day with hope and motivation to keep going. My family, friends and colleagues who listen and advise with unwavering belief in my abilities to keep learning and keep my eye on the prize. I love them all and am so grateful to have their foundational support to keep believing in my vision and in myself.
