We had the good fortune of connecting with Devantae Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devantae, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The process started without me even knowing it. I was young and already had business ownership & entrepreneurialism instilled in me. I just needed that spark, and that spark came from seeing my family & elders around me grind so hard at a typical “9-5” for someone else’s dream. I knew growing up I couldn’t work for someone else, I had to have my “own” ! Even when I did have the typical job, coworkers will see me creating profitable ideas or even in our conversations, you can hear the passion in my voice, whether I’m talking about something I want to do, or plan to do. Once I set my mind to something I go after it by all means, and people saw that. Everyone doesn’t have that. I knew I needed to go into business for myself once job after job after job didn’t bring me happiness or fulfillment. It was more of an obligation. I couldn’t see myself growing old working for someone else’s company. I’m well then capable of making my own, and I did & I’m Forever grateful.
What should our readers know about your business?
I’m the owner of actually two businesses. I run and operate my self-proclaimed BarberShop. (CHOP CITY). Also am the CEO & Creator of my clothing line “LIVE LIFE INDY” Which is on the rise ! It wasn’t easy getting to this point, but I learn daily. I have days where I’m challenged or come across something I’ve never dealt with before. Most will quit and give up, not me. Which I feel sets me apart from a percentage of peers my age. I will find a way or talk to someone that I know has dealt with similar issues. I’ve learned many lessons, good and bad. But that’s what this is about, trial and error. You have to find what works for you and your business(es). I want the world to know about my brand , and to know that we can run with the best of them ! I won’t be left out or forgotten. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s too many people to input. I owe recognition and credit to every supporter and friend and family in my corner. There’s days when I want to call it quits but those in my circle and in my life tell me I can’t stray away from purpose. So In shorter words, if I had to shoutout and give credit, I give credit to my people. I give credit to each model; Jerron Harris, Roy Dailey , Darche Baker-Jordan , Sandy Mendoza-Rabb, Indigo Rose, Sierra Hester, Kyle Brown & my photographer Kalvin Miller.
