Ever since I was a little girl, I have learned the history of my people. Unfortunately, that history has been tainted with a great deal of persecution, oppression and bloodshed. My ancestors experienced an attempted Genocide by Turkey back in the early 1900’s. My grandfather, having survived this failed attempt, witnessed his entire family including his brothers and sisters killed right in front of his eyes. My favorite saying is “Pursue Your Passion”. This is not only my mantra as an artist, but even more importantly, as a human being. My wife, Dana, and I raised our three sons (who are now in their 20’s and 30’s) with this focus and they are all in industries that are rooted in their passions. My wife and I also attempt to inspire anyone and everyone we meet and encourage them to focus on their passions. No matter if it is a hobby or a profession, this focus on what you are inherently passionate about is a foundational key to a happy life. Once you’ve started making your passions a priority and view it as a basic life necessity, you will find that all of your decision making becomes clearer and easier. Our happiness can come from outside sources, but if you aren’t happy on the inside, nothing on the outside will fulfill you. “Your best ability is availability.” I like this quote because it’s a great tool for the barber industry, as well as any other profession or business. It’s important to remember that being available can be as important, if not more, as any other asset you have to offer. If you’re good at what you do, but not consistent with people having access to what it is you possess, it creates quite an issue and can render what you offer virtually useless. For example, if you own a coffee shop and have the best coffee in town but are only open every other Thursday from 1pm-2pm, you might find it difficult to drum up business, even with a great product given that small window of availability. It’s either inconvenient for someone looking to grab a cup of coffee on a regular basis, or they won’t know how good your coffee is in the first place since it’s nearly impossible to try your product with the limited timeframe to do so. I have 2 quotes or phrases that I try my best to live by. The first one is “If you are early, you are on time. If you are on time, you are late. If you are late, you are fired”. That phrase was ingrained in me early on by my high school theatre teacher and it still sticks with me to this day. And this phrase really rings true in the industry. I was very late twice in my career and both times the people who hired me have never hired me back. I still beat myself up about those 2 gigs, but I completely understand. Especially in film, time is precious, so showing up and being ready to start working right on time is integral. The other phrase I try to lie my life by is “Never stop learning”. There are always so many new techniques or technologies that are constantly being introduced.
