My favorite saying is “Boss up or get bossed around.” It’s self-explanatory, you’re either going to step up to the plate or get out the way. I’ve been making boss moves my whole life. I don’t own a Fortune 500 company or anything like that but make things happen for myself. When it’s all said and done, I want to be able to create opportunity for others like a boss should. I’m going to cheat a bit and pick two quotes. The first is “No matter how bad or slow things go, you’re still way ahead of everyone who isn’t even trying” and the second is “If one dream should fall and break into a thousand pieces, never be afraid to pick one of those pieces up and begin again.” I think that first quote is so important for artists to internalize because, the reality is, most artists fail simply because they give up. I know this better than anyone because I gave up on music for years. In fact, I moved halfway around the world to Spain: somewhere where nobody would know who I was and I could hide from everything back in my hometown that reminded me of the music career I ran away from. “All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.” T.E. Lawrence Read more>>

“What would you do if you knew you could not fail?”. When I find myself in situations where I feel lost or unaware of what direction to take in life, I ask myself this question. Then, I know that every professional or personal life decision I make should be in alignment with achieving this goal. If I know I would peruse it if I could not fail, why should anything stop me from trying now? Read more>>

“Lo que es para ti, nadie te lo quita.” “What is for you, nobody can take away.” This saying has comforted me on my best and worst days. My abuelita Esperanza, who recently passed away, would tell me this all the time. She was someone who believed in me before I truly believed in myself. A really good friend of mine, Lizzy, always sends me this quote on days when I need to be reminded to keep going. Read more>>

“How you do one thing is how you do everything.” My mentor, Erikaa Briones, told me this and it changed my outlook on life. I had to notice how I was doing one thing and apply that viewpoint across everything else- and realized it was all the same. Read more>>

My favorite quote is from Joan Didion: “You have to pick the places you don’t walk away from.” I love this because it encapsulates the importance for discernment in hard situations or relationships. A balance is always necessary but the discernment to acknowledge what really matters, what relationships truly matter to not walk away but to engage with, fight for and cherish. It’s a good reminder for me when things enviably get tough. Read more>>

“If it is to be, Its up to me” – My Father Carroll J. Brown Sr. Growing up in a single parent household in South Central raised by my father. He always instilled in his boys that no matter what we do he is always proud of us, and that if it is to be then it is up to us. Meaning, we are in control of our destiny, we are the ones in life who can determine our level of success. Being older I look at it as this is a powerful message to instill into a child at an early young age. Especially a message from a black father raising two black boys in the heart of South Central while he worked two jobs. Read more>>

My favorite affirmation is “The Universe is on our side”. I say it out loud almost every day. I say it before every show with the rest of the band. I think in the world we live in today it’s good to remind ourselves that we are meant to be here. We are here to flourish and enjoy our lives. It’s easy for us to get stuck with where we are suppose to be in life. Sometimes we put so much focus on what we don’t have and forget to appreciate everything that has happened for us, big or mall. “The Universe is on our side” is a perfect reminder that something, someone is there for you. There are many quotes about creativity that give me inspiration, and motivate me to work on my craft, but one of my favorites is from acclaimed author Ursula Le Guin, who wrote, “The creative adult is the child who survived.” There are so many things I love about that sentence, but I think the main piece of wisdom I draw from it, is that creativity is essentially a gift we are each born with. Creativity is such a natural part of childhood, to use one’s imagination, to create and understand the world around you. Read more>>
