We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Provansal and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, what can you share with us about how Covid-19 has affected your business?
Like most small businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic completely altered the way we work. For us, being primarily in the events industry, our world has come to a complete stop. It’s a defining moment of make it or break out. We have to look at our business and where we’re able to pivot in order to create additional revenue channels and diversify our brand, while still staying true to our overall brand DNA. Being a young business, we are going back to our roots in social media and public relations, expanding our brand story outside of events. Social Media has always been a foundation for us as we create events that are “instagrammable” but now we’re working diligently to build out that side of our business. We, like so many people and businesses, are looking forward to the days when we can plan events and gather together again, while incorporating even more social media layers and amplification than ever before.

What should our readers know about your business?
Tamara and I both met almost 10 years ago working together for a fashion brand. We immediately became great friends and ironically found that our lives had paralleled each other going to the same high school and college (although never meeting till we started working together!). Over the last decade, we had built a great working relationship as well as a friendship and knew that we wanted to do more. We started Social Society OC as a side passion project because we both felt like we needed a deeper creative outlet. I think we both had dreams of owning our own business but had forgotten how important it was to dream. Our vision from day one has always been simple, we value our clients and believe in the notion of transparency. I think a lot of business try to be a lot of things to everyone instead of sticking to their core values. We believe in open communication and honesty. We’re all working to accomplish the same goal with our clients and we believe we’re just an extension of the brand family with our clients. For us, the last couple years have been working hard to build the business that we had a vision for. Now, in the midst of this crisis, we’re working to expand and diversify the business since so much of what we do overlaps other industries but works together for the synergy of the company. The biggest lesson we’ve learned throughout the years is to never give up. We absolutely love what we do and who we get to work with and we look forward the future!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Emily: There are so many inspirational and female owned and operated businesses that I look up to but at the end of the day, the person who inspires me the most is actually my dad. He’s owned his business for the last twenty plus years and was the first one to support and encourage me to venture into the entrepreneur world. He’s always been there with sound advice, helping on how to navigate difficult situations or brainstorm when we need to pivot the business due to COVID-19. He’s always given me the confidence to believe in myself, talents and given me the safety net to take that leap of faith because he’ll be there to catch me if I fall. To me, that’s priceless. Tamara: Over the last few months, I have had a chance to reflect on our journey. There have been a number of individuals, podcasts, and books that have shaped my inspiration and work ethic. One individual in particular has motivated me to be the best I can be, to never compromise, and to always show my strengths. She is my four-year-old daughter and when I look at her, all I want her to see is that she can do it too. If I set the right foundation for her, she will have the ability to not only accomplish what I have, but to also take it to the next level. She is my motivation!
