We had the good fortune of connecting with Alasia Shalai and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alasia, what do you attribute your success to?
I think the most important factor behind my brands success is reinvention. I’m always thinking of how to reinvent the fashion I create and offer a fresh perspective on current/past trends. While my brand is still growing, I’ve seen success in what I’ve created so I know it’s only up from here.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What has always set me apart from others is my resourcefulness. If I have an idea, I find every possible way to get it done. One of the things I’m most proud of is that I taught myself graphic design and eventually was able to create my own print. I’m excited to see where this new found talent will take me and my brand.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned throughout the years is patience. I always put a time on when I should be in a certain place but had to realize that everyone has their own journey. And now looking back on it, I’m glad I didn’t “blow up” when i originally wanted to, because I would’ve thought that what I was creating was good enough. I’m on a completely different level now than I was back then and that’s because I was forced to go harder.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well y’all aren’t going to like this answer lol — I’m a homebody
But no seriously I like going to happy hour, so my favorite spot for that is Prank Bar in DTLA. I live in DTLA so my favorite spots are little biased.
I like to also go to Malibu. My favorite hike is Les Liones trail.
Places I like to eat are Ackee Bamboo Jamaican, Stevie’s on Pico, and was Krab Queenz until they closed down 😩
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There’s so many people / things I can attribute my success to. My boyfriend has been a huge part of my journey from supporting on the backend with everyday work to helping with the design process. He’s truly been my right hand.
