We had the good fortune of connecting with Athena Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Athena, how do you think about risk?
As an Actress and Dancer, every decision I make is another risk I’m taking that reflects how I live my life. I’m an over thinker which can hold me back from a lot of opportunities but once I get that leap of faith to take the risk and go the extra mile, in the end, I never regret it. I think, without the passion and drive that I have to achieve my goals, I wouldn’t be able to motivate myself to take risks. I like to think of risks as a way of overcoming my fears and being able to experience things that I’ve never experienced before.
In acting, when it comes to discovering who I am as the character in a scene, I have always been taught to make creative and more in depth decisions rather than trying to find the right answer as to who the character should be. Sometimes I tend to find myself trying to find the right answers, which can lead to frustration and doubt. However, I like to think of the character that I’m playing as a version of myself that I haven’t discovered yet, so when I’m able to get out of my head and take the risk to explore my possibilities within the character, I’m able to discover who I am as a human being and discover a side of myself that I never knew before.
The same goes for dancing and exploring my possibilities through how my body moves. By allowing the music to control my body rather than forcing my body to move to the music, it will just come naturally based on how I am feeling in that moment and it will allow for self discovery. Even though taking risks scares me, I know that if i’m willing to let go, it will be worth all of the discoveries I come to know.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My main goal within my acting and dancing is to always keep challenging myself and challenging my creativity. I want the world to know that I’m not going to stop until I’ve reached my limit in storytelling and even then I still won’t stop trying to grow my crafts and professions. It’s not the awards that drive my determination, it’s my love for understanding a character’s purpose and the function of a human life through stories that drives me to be in films and TV shows. I love what most people would call the homework to prepare for a role. To me the homework allows me to explore my options and test my creativity within those options. My goal is to have a lead role in a Marvel film as a badass Latina super hero.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To start the day, I would take them to some fancy brunch spots in West Hollywood, Calabasas and Malibu. Some days would be brunch on the beach and others would be reserved for just a relaxing beach day. Then we would go shopping at The Grove and/or Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Maybe even have an amusement park day at Disneyland, Six Flags or Universal Studios. For dinner, we would go to some fancy restaurants in DTLA and maybe have a late night rooftop movie night!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mom and dad. I am so thankful for all of their love, support and encouragement throughout my journey toward success on this tough career that I’ve chosen. I honestly wouldn’t be where I am today without them. It means the world to me to know that they will always be there for me. They have literally done so much just to make sure I succeed in my goals and I am so grateful for them!
