We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Hoover and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I would say that the two biggest habits that have played a role in my life personally and in a business, aspect is hard work, determination, and to never give up. I am 37 years old and fish tanks have been a true passion of mine since the age of 7. I strongly believe that when you go to work every day and feel passionate about what you do it does not feel like you’re working, it becomes a lifestyle. Although I am grateful to have built my business up to where it is today, being a business owner is not easy. I would say the two biggest and most important things to maintain a successful business is to set goals for yourself, your company, as well as your employees and to stay motivated. Nothing good comes easy and if you allow a bump in the road to slow you down in the process you will lose sight of the prize.
What should our readers know about your business?
Since 2001, Aquatic Contractors has been one of the largest aquarium service companies in Southern California. As a company, we specialize in both fresh and salt water that range from small to large volume aquariums. In 2013, we were given the opportunity to join the production crew of Animal Planet Television show called Tanked. For five years and over 30 episodes, my team and I were in charge of all pre-fabrication site visits, on-site installation as well as after care fore the fish. Currently we are working on a new project to be a part of a new aquarium show which is being shopped to market. Getting Aquatic Contractors to the size it is now was not an easy journey but lives not meant to be easy. Throughout the years of business, you come across anything and everything from crazy clients, to struggling employees. At the end of the day, it is important to reflect on the positives of the day and not the negatives. The hardest part and biggest lesson along the way is grind hard and stay humble.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of the best spots in the city to check out is in Santa Monica at the west coast starting point for the Route66, Mel’s Diner. The American Graffiti themed aquarium was featured on Tanked, and we have performed weekly maintenance for the past few years. After the food, you hop in the car and take PCH up the coast through Malibu on one of the most scenic drives the state has to offer. From Malibu you have the option to travel north and visit another client, the Ojai valley Inn, for an amazing vacation of golfing, or relaxing at the pool/spa. Be sure to bring the kids on this adventure and check out Camp oak, the children center featuring a 600-gallon aquarium, with a bubble in the acrylic to get a view from inside the tank. the other option from Malibu would be to head inland to Westlake Village and book a night or a spa day at The Four Seasons, Westlake Village. That hotel is home to another one of our aquariums, a massive 2100-gallon tank that operates the lobby with the sushi bar. After you feel well and rested, jump on the 101 and head in Hollywood and its hundreds of attractions. Being from Thousand Oaks, I am also a huge fan and ticket holder for the Rams. Hopefully Next Season you will be able to check out Sofi Stadium and The Los Angeles Rams. If football is not your game, head across town to Chavez and watch the 2020 World Champion Dodgers!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
