We had the good fortune of connecting with Caira Butler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caira, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Saint Louis, Missouri. My interest in fashion came from my mom and cousin being part of the fashion world here in Saint Louis. My cousin owned her own bridal salon selling gorgeous gowns and accessories. I remember being young and small feeling like I was in the most magical place in the world (yes, better than Disney). It was such a luxurious boutique filled with different dress styles, colors, and fabrics. I was amazed at how beautiful clothing could be. My mom modeled for a few years at Florissant Valley Community College at their annual fashion show. I was so inspired by my mom walking down the runway in the most elegant styles with grace and confidence. These two experiences of my mom and cousin are where my interest in fashion began. As I grew older, I knew fashion was a passion of my mine, but I didn’t know how to utilize it until I met an alumnus from Columbia College Chicago. She was a major in Fashion Photography, and I didn’t realize that existed as a career until she explained that is what we see in magazines and on e-commerce sites. From then on I went to Columbia College Chicago to study Fashion Business and Marketing and attained internships at luxury brands such as Modern Luxury, Vera Wang, and Neiman Marcus. With all of these amazing experiences I have had and am still creating, I know fashion is something I want to use to impact the world not only with clothes but encouraging others who want to pursue a career in fashion to do it no matter if others say. Young men and women should not be discouraged when others say, “you shouldn’t do it”, “you can’t do it”, or “why don’t you want to be a doctor?” I learned to not let negative comments influence who I am and what I know I can do.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the Founder/ CEO of my small business, StylemeC. StylemeC is an online boutique offering fashion-forward styles to women throughout the U.S. I was inspired to create StylemeC because living in Saint Louis, Missouri there is not much access to fashion-forward clothing. I wanted to create a business that allowed women of Saint Louis to find styles that they can conveniently shop from my site or any pop-up shops I have around the city. It took a lot of research to understand all of the requirements needed to create a business. It was a lot of paperwork, money, and tough decisions to make with creating my brand, but it has been completely worth it. My family helped me overcome challenges with their advice and ability to answer any questions I had as far as legalities, trademarking, etc. The lesson I learned along the way is to be patient when launching a business. You want it to be perfect to fit you and your customer’s standards. it’ll be worth the patience and hard work that you put into it. Right now, StylemeC is my little baby that I am excited to share with the world. The brand of StylemeC will be more than just selling clothing, but also about women feeling confident when wearing the styles I sell online.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Saint Louis, we are known for the Arch, Chinese food, Imo’s Pizza, toasted ravioli, gooey butter cake, and more. My Saint Louis tour is more like a food tour. First, we would head downtown to look at the arch and go on the tour that takes up to the top of the arch overlooking the city. We would then go to Ted Drew’s ice cream to get Saint Louis’ one-of-a-kind frozen custard. Next, we would go down the street from Ted Drew’s to the famous family-owned Gooey Louie to indulge in the most delicious gooey butter cake in town. We may have had dessert before dinner, but who is really judging? Next, we would have to go to the hole in the wall located in the “Chinatown” of Saint Louis called Lamb’s Garden to feast on the most delicious fried rice and Saint Louis St. Paul. Later during the week we definitely have to go to Imo’s Pizza for the best thin. crust pizza you have ever had, and don’t forget about the toasted ravioli. If we want to have a friend’s night out we could dress up and go out to get delicious, hand-crafted drinks at 360 rooftop bar located in the heart of downtown Saint Louis. Now if you’re a sports fan you definitely have to experience a Saint Blues Hockey game and Saint Louis Cardinals Baseball game to enjoy a true Saint Louis experience. We also have fun outdoor activities such as paddle boating, canoeing, ziplining, and maybe enjoy a picnic at Art Hill located in Forest Park.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My support is 100%, my family. They have encouraged me, helped me find opportunities, connected me with professionals in the industry who both inspire and motivate me to be successful in my career. The friends that I have met through my family are included in this group as well because they have helped and cared for me just as a family would. I am so blessed to be surrounded by such loving, inspiring, and successful men and women who want to help others succeed too.
