We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlie Briggs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charlie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Before I started my own business, I was the type of employee that would never call out, always showed up early, and never asked for what I deserved. There was a moment where I was exhausted and miserable, and in the back of my mind, I knew that I was getting closer and closer to resigning. I would receive confirmations from the universe; whether it was clients saying things like “I would follow you anywhere!” to friends and family telling me “hey, you really have something here.” I had one friend who sat me down and asked bluntly: “what are you doing? why are you not working for yourself? You have all of the resources you need, so just do it!” At that time, I was living in a 2 bedroom apartment by myself and definitely had space to convert the spare room into a home studio and after that reality check plus getting past the fear of “being perfect” I decided to start Charlie Briggs Therapy. I was scared but really excited to do something I’ve talked about for years. I knew I would value myself, and I love not having to wear a uniform or clock in at a certain time!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Although I’m not a traditional artist that uses canvas and paint, I do still consider myself to be a creator. Massage therapy and sound healing is an art form; creating safe, comfortable spaces and transmuting one energy to the next. I like to think of myself as “The Rebel.” I typically shy away from what’s popular and have created a style that is unique to Charlie Briggs Therapy. When people receive my services, they are aware there’s “something different” than what they’ve ever received before. During my work, I tap into the universe and all work that is done comes from unconditional love and pure intentions. I give my all to ensure you have the best experience whether you’re looking to relax or wanting to remove energy blocks from your life.
It took me a while to figure out who I was and what my style was. For the longest time, I was offering basic services which were good, but I knew I could offer so much more. During the peak of Covid-19, I became fascinated with the healing components of sound and decided to embark on the journey of a sound healer. As a licensed massage therapist, I found sound therapy to be a natural progression. I taught myself how to play the crystal singing bowls, and studied all things sound, frequency, and neurology for months during the quarantine period. I knew the fundamentals of energy already, so working the sound bowls felt like a natural transition.
There are a lot of times where I doubt my work, especially now that the wellness industry is saturated with “healers.” A lot of people have the aesthetics down and know how to put on a good show, but I know that I have a gift that people can literally feel. If there’s anything I want people to know, is that you don’t have to have to pay for years of schooling or have a piece of paper with your name on it that proves you are worthy. I get asked so many times “do you have a credential?” or “where did you learn?” when asked about my sound therapist journey and it feels so invalidating. This is a God-given talent that I honor through my work.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would try to find some hidden gems around Los Angeles and Long Beach, hit up some beaches, definitely find a place to dance, go to a winery, eat a lot of delicious foods that we’ll regret afterward, go hiking at Griffith Park, and look through Fever to see what fun experiences we can do!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the continuous support of my loyal clients, my wonderful social media family, my partner, my closest friends, the beautiful souls at Greenstone Farm in Los Angeles, The Chroma Cabana, and the local Long Beach businesses!
