Meet Dani Martinez | Composer & Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dani Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dani, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
There are moments I’ve had while working on a project where I get pretty bad writer’s block, or start second guessing the work I’m creating. In those moments, it’s actually even more important for me to keep going. Usually in the mere moments right before I finish creating something I’m truly proud of, I hit a wall. All that wall really tells me is to take a step back and maybe take a quick break from the project. I almost always have the answers I need once I return.
On the other hand, when a project starts to feel tedious, as if I’m just going through the motions of creating rather than truly enjoying it, I’ve learned how to let go. Not every project is going to be my magnum opus, and being able to recognize that has been essential to my success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My main artistic focus has always been storytelling. This focus applies to my solo songwriting projects, as well as my compositions for visual media. Every piece of music I have written commits to some kind of story, whether literally or figuratively. I am proud of how that priority remains central to the projects I’ve been working on recently, just as it was central to the “piano stories” I wrote as a child.
A lesson I’ve learned throughout my journey is that if you’re only making art for others, it’s easy to lose yourself in the process. The reason I sat down at the piano as a five-year-old is the same reason I’ll sit down with an empty Logic session over two decades later. I want to tell a story, experiment with sounds, and express myself.
Some people have a philosophy that the “self” and “ego” should be taken out of art. But I have learned that it’s okay, and even beautiful, to inject everything I create with my personality and flair. Because what is my art if not my “self”?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to the community I’ve been so lucky to curate during my creative career. This community includes my collaborators, friends, family, and partner, all of whom have granted me support, respect, and love during the most difficult moments, as well as the most rewarding.
Life is pretty meaningless without your people, and it is a privilege to get to share every moment with them by your side.
