We had the good fortune of connecting with Foxx Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Foxx, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Well risk taking can be a scary thought since we dont know what the outcome may be, but to me that’s where the magic is! In my career so far, risk taking has taught me that you can always bounce back from anything. I’d like to think of decisions and risk as “flow”, if it feels like a flowing river that cant stop then I usually go with it. If I have to question the risk more than twice I wont do it. Its helped me a lot with being more innovative since most people dont have the pussy to step outside of the socially accepted “box”….then I will be the one to do it!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started off in the industry as a singer. I was asked all the damn time if I could write for other artist as well as myself so I did. Eventually after 2 years of going to studio after studio and landing some huge meetings with labels like Interscope and RCA and meeting some dope people along the way, it led to a weird meeting with a big A&R about my career and how he could help me. That meeting turned into me assisting him as an A&R. He saw more than me being creative and writing a bunch of songs. He said I was a “boss”, so shit I agreed lol. With this new venture ahead of me I looked at my future from different perspectives. I started to wonder if I was limiting myself as just a writer or just a singer when I knew I could do more! One day I was playing around with old clothes and I started to recreate a few looks. They came out so good that I told my friends that i would make more for them to wear. My homegirl who does web designs was in town visiting that same weekend and she begged me to let her start my website. This is when that flow started to really happen. She made a beautiful website for me and I started selling my merch online. I knew I wasnt gonna stop there so I started thinking of innovative ways to post my work. That’s when I included my talents in music along with the marketing for my merch. After that came the idea of shooting my photoshoots. Randomly enough, more flow came through when my friend Marcus texted me asking if I wanted his old camera….BITCH IM ON MY WAY! Today I take all of these elements of my art and marry them together! I design and manufacture my own clothes, style them on models, art direct my shoots, shoot them myself and use music and storytelling to promote it all on my social outlets! I love what I do and its continously flowing, just like a river!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok first things first, we GOTTA hit studio 402 in dtla. They have amazing music and a super chill vibe. Kinda like a night starter. Then for the views we going to mama’s shelter in Hollywood. We definitely ubering lol….or taking risk, depends sis. I love when the atmosphere of a venue is well lit and the interior decor is fun! With that being said we can then walk over to No Vacancy and use the password to get in! They have a dope patio with a full bar and great lighting! Good for some ig pics! After that long night we gotta sweat out the alcohol at the trials in malibu. The mountains there have the best views and it’s not crowded at all. If we are too tired to drive back we can stop by the cocoon house in malibu and create a vibe…literally they shoot really nice content there and always have food! I love to shop so we can walk down melrose and check out all of the fresh finds and vintage thrifting! Especially on sundays when there’s a trading post open at fairfax high school. When that’s done we can hit leimert park for some soulful vibes and good eats! Also we can fall in love with a thug and a yoga instructor all in the same day lol. My place is pretty sacred so we can end the week with a great vegan dinner and wine by the fireplace and talk about boys and how women will actually rule the world and dabble into zodiacs for fun. I can read your birth chart to you and tell you who you should date….I’m obsessed with that shit.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shout out to the person who knows me best and who I can literally call if I ever committed murder….lol jk…..Nathi. She is an amazingly talented singer, producer, songwriter, painter and Aires. We are also roommates in LA and we share a dope podcast together called “The Roommates”. Nathi has helped me grow into the woman and artist that I am today by allowing me to Express myself with no judgment and comforting my emotions even if I dont feel at ease with them myself.
