We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie Sun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackie, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Before starting FUGGIAMO, I struggled a bit with following a linear, predefined career path. I worked in sales, marketing and fashion buying in SF, LA, and NY. But as the years went by, I felt increasingly depleted and unfulfilled. After taking time off to reset and travel, I finally decided to take the leap and make my dream come true in opening my own shop. What came from a desire to share my travels has grown into working with a family of emerging artists and designers from around the world.

Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today business-wise. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
Very important to me is cultivating a unique curation in consciously thinking through who we work with and what we carry. Most of our designers work with sustainable materials or local, trusted factories, but as important as how something is made is why. Whether artful, therapeutic pillows from Rose Greenberg or a perfume vial necklace from Virginia Jirash, the pieces in the shop are not only aesthetically appealing, but often have a deeper story or purpose. A lot of thought goes into what we do. I’m especially proud of keeping to that mindset in today’s digital landscape, where social media amplifies and hastens the lifespan/turnover of trends and outside noise.

One of the biggest challenges, though, is and has been finances, particularly during this pandemic. In figuring out how to navigate the past year and a half, I had to scale back on a lot of plans. But this fall, I’m hoping to get back to our roots of connection with more shoots, collaborations, and real life events. Stay tuned!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
LA can be overwhelming, so I’d focus on what makes the city so special – the diverse landscape and communities. Obviously if we’re besties, we love food and spending time outside, so my itinerary would include:

  • Stopping at my favorite mom and pop spots in the SGV and Ktown, a taco crawl on the eastside, and maybe Botanica in Silver Lake
  • Exploring Griffith Park and the Observatory
  • Cruising along iconic LA roads like Sunset Boulevard and PCH
  • Biking and picnicking at a beach
  • Enjoying a farmer’s market (the South Pasadena and Santa Monica ones are the best!)

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m lucky to have an amazing community of fellow creatives, entrepreneurs, and small business owners here in LA. FUGGIAMO wouldn’t be what it is without their kindness, generosity, and encouragement. And the shop would definitely not be what it is without our wonderful designers and customers.
