We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Mok & Christine Luk N/A and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen Mok & Christine Luk, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
We share the same vision to take care of our earth and the people in it, starting with you and me! On a trip to Japan, we passed through an environmental science museum that showed the alarming amount of waste humans create each day. We wanted to do our part to reduce impact on climate change, the pollution in food chains, and micro-plastic in rain. We set out to find simple ways to empower people to use products that are kinder to their bodies and to our earth.
We ask each other simple but mindful questions, such as, “Can this be repurposed? Can we reuse these plastic to-go containers for something else? Instead of throwing away our empty but still perfectly functional plastic shampoo bottle, why not use it over and over again?” We believe change begins with small, daily choices, and that one mindful decision at a time can make a real difference.
With all these beliefs and practices, One Eco Store is established at a local farmers market every weekend. We set up a refill station and shared our mission to everyone in the community. Encourage customers to reuse their containers for refills. We worked with suppliers who share the same mission which also takes back our empty buckets for refill. As a business, we try our best to reduce waste every step of the way.
What should our readers know about your business?
Beside the refill station, we are proudly launched a wide range of handcrafted products including bath and body products. Each product is unique and artistic with sustainable recipe in mind. Ingredients are gentle to the skin and sourced from environmental friendly practice. The handcrafted bars are popular gifts in all occasions.
Currently we are expanding our locations from West to East of Los Angeles. Since the beginning, we always be presence at the markets every week, reaching out to different people at events, and be interactive with our community by sharing low waste life style tips.
The challenges are balancing between our mission and profits. Our beliefs are low waste life style creates a better environment by the sources that we choose. The profit margin is challenging by using quality ingredients and cater to most customers. We found education is very important. Constantly educating ourselves with knowledge through Resource and Recycling program at Santa Monica College, workshops by Drawdown organizations, and any related news. So we can spread the knowledge that we’ve learned to the community and bring more awareness.
Low waste lifestyle is a journey. It is not about sacrifice, judgement, and guilt. We are all unique and different in many ways. Keeping an open mind is the key. Low waste lifestyle can be creative and stylish.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Malibu is a beautiful landmark to experience California’s sunshine and beaches. Beside the beautiful coastline, the Malibu Wine Safaris offers tours and tasting in an open-air vehicle.
A day hike in the Santa Monica Mountains and/or Los Angeles Forest is perfect if you are a adventurist. Follow by dining at The Elephante in breezy, loungelike with ocean views.
There are many famous museums in Los Angeles. For example, the Getty Museum, LACMA, and The Broad – these must be on your bucket list!
Last but not least, don’t forget the local Farmers Markets. You often find stylish handcrafted gems, fun people, and unique local goods. Enjoy!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to our family and friends! We are very thankful of all the unconditional love and supports from our family.
Karen- Thank you my sisters, Gabriel, Mom and Dad for your support. Encourage me to take risk in a wise way. While I continue my full-time job, and working on One Eco Store which is exhausting, my family are always here whenever I needed. Thanks for my sisters, cousins, who tried my products and give comments and continue to see positive in my business even in low days. Thanks Gabriel for coming to market with me to keep me accompanied.
Christine – Special thanks to my mom Eva and my husband Jason. They are always there for me no matter it rains or shines. Both of them dedicated a tremendous amount of effort by sharing handcrafted bars recipes and knowledge and showing up at all of our markets and events.
Besides our wonderful families, our friends are very supportive by sharing their valuable experiences. They always give wise advises and lead us to the right path.
We want to thank our friend Sophie, who give us priceless business tips, encouragement and pushed us and open our mind to possibilities. Shout out to our vending neighbors at Bentwood Farmers market Songul at Turkan Home and Pan at Panik Ryder Boutique. In addition, special thanks to all of our friends and loyal customers who continue support our mission. Together, we will bring a better world and environment for the future.
We can’t continue pursing our dreams without all these love and supports from all of you!
