We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Oliak and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Ounce of Salt Jewelry’s mission is to make shopping for fine jewelry less intimidating. No Shade, Only Sparkle. Offering concierge services in fine jewelry available to anyone. OOSJ is redefining the jewelry industry by offering more transparency and education.
OOSJ features clean lines, and updated, sophisticated classics with a twist.
I offer a collection of my own designs, and also carry a selection of curated products. I am primarily a virtual full service jewelry store but offer in-person appointments to the local Southern California South Bay community by private appt.
No one wants to do business with someone they don’t like. Consumers are demanding more from the brands they purchase from than just pretty pictures, luxurious facades, and “aspirational life” marketing.
Case in point: Instagram and their evolution. In the beginning years, profile grids were filled with impossible to shoot, perfect life pictures of beauty and unattainable luxury. It has evolved to more authentic content that shows vulnerability and relatability.
Fine jewelry is still Instagram in the early years. Ounce of Salt Jewelry is Instagram today.
I’ve been sharing my life through my lifestyle blog, Ounce of Salt, since 2016, discussing inspired living women-over-40 topics and the metamorphosis of myself. I share values that others in my demographic resonate with. My blog allows my customers to get to know me and earn their trust.
Story-telling and values is where branding is going. And in a saturated market like fine jewelry, sharing mine has allowed me to “shine” to consumers who want to know who they’re buying from.
What should our readers know about your business?
Most people find the world of fine jewelry confusing and intimidating. I’ve focused on eliminating the “shade” the industry is notorious for. I work to deliver confidence
that my clients are getting the ultimate quality and value. Because when you
feel confident, the entire shopping experience shifts from stressful to fun and
Unfortunately, the jewelry industry can be impossible to navigate alone. Most
people are (understandably) apprehensive to shop online, or even know how to
be sure that they’re getting the best value for their budget.
My family history has always been intertwined with jewelry. My Grandfather was a passionate jeweler,
and my father followed in his footsteps. My childhood was spent playing with
and learning about gems and jewelry, but actually, I never intended to make it
Looking back on my life, Ounce of Salt Jewelry makes perfect sense, but I spent
the first decade of my career in NYC corporate finance. Now, I put my business
and analytical skills to work analyzing quality and production costs, then I pass
that value on to my clients!
I make custom designs accessible to anyone! I specialize in custom
engagement rings, redesigns, and one-of-a-kind legacy-pieces. By working
virtually, I can find or design dream-jewelry for anyone around the country. By
eliminating the typical overhead of a brick-and-mortar retail store, I work more
efficiently and pass the savings on to my customers!
Not everything needs to be custom, so there’s plenty to shop from on my online
store. Clients can shop from an original collection of Ounce of Salt Designs and
a curated collection of favorites from other designers.
The jewelry industry is still lagging in technology and efficiency! It’s still a world
of artisans and storefronts trying to maintain the old ways of doing business. I
think that growing up, this was the part of the business that never appealed to
For those of us with a modern vision who are tech savvy, there’s a huge
opportunity to innovate right now. Ounce of Salt Jewelry is a very different
My father passed away way too early, so my mother went to work to support us.
During that time, I played with her jewelry ritually. I’d enter her room, take out
the velvet box and open it to reveal it’s glistening stones and gold. Each time I
opened that box, I felt a rush of joy. Admiring those sparkling pieces
transported me to earlier years when my dad was still strong and he could
make my mom laugh. The jewelry made me feel safe and loved.
With Ounce of Salt Jewelry, I feel a hint of this every day. I’ve returned “home”
and I’m so grateful.
After years of building a brand through my lifestyle blog and leveraging it to
develop my virtual jewelry store, I was ready to kick up my gears with
COVID-19. How could I have known that the virtual foundation I had built would
come in handy during a pandemic!
Today, it’s more clear than ever that people want to know who they are buying
from. Today’s consumers want to support businesses that they feel kindred to!
Especially in fine jewelry, trust is the most important factor. I’m proud to say I’ve
positioned myself well to serve today’s jewelry lover!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
