We had the good fortune of connecting with Jillian Wells and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jillian, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea behind Paloverde started back in 2018 when I was planning my own desert wedding in Palm Springs. I was on the hunt for bridesmaid ask boxes that were unique and special and, naturally, inspired by the flora and fauna of the desert! At my day job, part of my duties was to shop for talent gifts, so I was no stranger to all the gift box options out there in the world. Everything I found was so drab, old school, cheap-looking, or the same things repeated over and over. And no marriage between unique, thoughtful gifts and live plants! So, I knew I wanted to create Paloverde to fill that exact need. Plants and botanical-inspired gifts are some of the most thoughtful gifts I received and I wanted to curate a shop filled with products from small businesses and artisans where folks could build their own perfect, personalized gift box inspired by nature. In 2020 I took the plunge and launched Paloverde and have had such an incredible time learning and growing alongside my gift box biz.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m so proud to have grown my own business in the middle of a pandemic and alongside a full-time career. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and the lessons that owning and operating a small business in the evenings and weekends outside of my job has taught me so much. I find myself growing and developing my career and entrepreneurship skills alongside each other, it feels very complimentary, skills I have in either arena have helped me continue in the other. My biggest challenge has been avoiding burnout. I’m passionate about all that I do (which certainly helps), but I’ve had to acknowledge that even my passions need a break and to allow myself the grace to take a night off without feeling guilty. If I could share one piece of advice for fellow entrepreneurs working a day job, it’s exactly that: do your best but allow yourself some grace and time to recover and reflect from the go-go-go of it all.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well my husband and I just moved up to Ventura and we’ve been having a blast discovering everything in our new hometown. I was a resident of LA for 11 years but couldn’t be happier being just up the coast and nearby the beach. Our favorite Saturday afternoon starts with a bike ride to midtown and an iced latte from Singing Sun. We grab fish tacos to-go from Spencer McKenzie’s and ride down to the beach to eat, read and relax. There’s a beautiful bike trail along the coast and if you’re hardcore, you can even ride up to Ojai for the day. Downtown Ventura has some incredible breweries and food to choose from, our go-to’s include thai from Rice by Mama, cocktails from Cocktail Trust, and beers from Made West. All super bikeable, which was a major plus for us. And if we’re lucky, there’s a weekend show up at the Santa Barbara Bowl which gives us an excuse to drive up along the beach and enjoy some live music. LA is a quick jaunt away, and Ojai, SB, and Solvang all make for amazing day trips, as well as a tour out to the Channel Islands for kayaking and whale watching. We’re so happy to be here and explore it all!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to shout out to my friends and family for supporting me since launching Paloverde. My first orders were friends and family and I learned SO much in the beginning. Two years into the business and I still see the names of my loved ones pop up on order confirmations and it brings me such joy that they trust Paloverde for gifting such important moments in their lives like marriages, new babies, new homes, and more. Extra shout out to my husband for dealing with all the storage needs that come with a retail business. My largest corporate order to date (330+ boxes) took up the entire living room of our previous home, with boxes stacked to the ceiling. He never once complained about the boxes or the crinkle paper that literally gets everywhere after assembly… for that, I owe him everything.
