We had the good fortune of connecting with Johanna Lieberman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Johanna, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

Yes, my success is because I’ve created Light + Grace Design, guided by a passion for beauty and well-being, inspiring each piece of jewelry I make, which is felt by, appreciated and connected to by those who wear and share Light + Grace.

Meaning is at the heart of my intentionally created, intuitively designed and lovingly handcrafted jewelry. And each gorgeous and consciously sourced gemstone used is bestowed with healing properties known to balance the mind, body and spirit.

Much like the experience of going to the sea to enjoy its awe-inspiring beauty and feeling the calm and clarity that it offers, my clients, when wearing Light + Grace Jewelry, appreciate the harmony and peace at the center of each Light + Grace Design, along with the allure of its versatility and timelessness.

As with creating a warm and welcoming home with the use of color, texture, and light, each piece includes these elements in their aesthetic while evoking a feeling of belonging, connection and well-being. One client says, “Johanna creates thoughtful pieces that are complex and uncomplicated at once. Her work makes me feel at home.”

I enjoy simple and effortless elegance in my style, whether it be in my dress, accessorizing or entertaining, which offers a sense of comfort and ease. I love seeing how my designs bring people together, whether with friendship gemstone jewelry, wedding pieces, or designs for mothers and daughters, families or couples.

The connection with Light + Grace and myself in person or virtually, to choose meaningful jewelry for oneself or a gift, makes for a beautiful experience, which I believe is one of the greatest gifts of Light + Grace and a secret to its success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

Light + Grace offers Beauty + Healing, two elements I feel are important to living fully. In these challenging times, we are all in need of finding ways to bring light and grace into our daily lives. Through my Jewelry and as a Reiki Master, I strive to offer upliftment to the spirit and soothing to the soul and to create jewelry and healing spaces which allow my clients to enjoy both a respite from and comfort in the world.

I find beauty and style most moving and striking when organic, versatile, and a bit raw and wild. I strive to incorporate these elements in my work, resulting in effortless and playful pairings and layering options, which enable clients to collect over time and add to their ensemble or give as a gift with ease. Most of my stones, styles, and palettes complement each other, ultimately creating combinations that are fun, flattering and work well for various occasions. A dear client remarked, “I love Johanna’s simple yet sophisticated pieces, which layer beautifully and can be worn as effortlessly to a beach picnic as to an elegant dinner in town. Light + Grace’s healing gems and designs are perfect as a thoughtful gift for a friend in need of a little something to keep their spirits high.”.

Elements from nature inform my collections and connect the wearer to other times and places. For example, a Light + Grace bestseller, the Sea Shimmer necklace, takes the wearer to the shore for a glimpse of the sun dancing on the water. Wearing the luminous Moon Goddess Necklace offers the peaceful feeling of standing beneath the moon in a starry sky.

Inspiration is everywhere and I get so much joy from sharing and tapping into it with others. A favorite aspect of my creative process is collaborating on designs. A client and I may rework an heirloom or sentimental piece into a more wearable modern version of the original or design a perfect and personal gift. I invite anyone with a vision or who may be desiring some inspiration to join me in creating jewelry together. I also work in collaboration with Textile and Clothing Designers and curate Custom Collections for Boutiques, and Healing Retreats and Resorts.

Entrepreneurship offers freedom, independence, and challenges. Ultimately, each obstacle that I’ve had to navigate along this path has contributed to the businesswoman I have become and success of my business.

One of my greatest challenges is finding and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Working from home this last couple of years has made it more difficult to step away from my worktable and computer even when I have accomplished my prioritized tasks for the day. I do make time to meditate on and manifest a life where I can feel successful as a business owner, mother, wife, and friend. It is challenging to prioritize a self-care practice, but I have found it most meaningful and rewarding to incorporate it into my day. Taking care of myself and getting my work done has become an interwoven, organic experience. I surround myself with crystals and candles and wear my gemstone jewelry all day every day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When friends come to visit I feel like I am on vacation in LA, which I love. We’d start most mornings out with a beach walk in Santa Monica or hike in Temescal Canyon followed by a Matcha Latte or Coffee at Tartine or Gjusta before popping into Goods on Ocean Park in Santa Monica or Yanapuma on Rose in Venice, two of my favorite LA boutiques. After that, we might head over to the Hammer Museum, up to the Getty for a look and lunch or out to the Huntington Gardens for a stroll. On another afternoon we will head over to Culver City to Village Well, a great bookstore and cafe for a glass of wine or coffee and to peruse their excellent selection of reads. For the evening we will either take a picnic to the Hollywood Bowl and catch a show, head downtown to the Arts District before a delicious Italian dinner at Rosso Blu or head up the PCH through Malibu Canyon to Moody Rooster, owned and run by Star Chef, Collin Crannell where the Farm to Table menu and food is incredible, especially when paired by Sommelier and Wine Curator, Franceco Ferrario with something perfectly exciting, organic and European from his excellent Wine List.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

The first person to inspire my passion for creating art was my father, an incredible artist and filmmaker, who always encouraged me to do what I love. Growing up surrounded by his art and creative lifestyle surely inspired my own. Several wonderful friends have been instrumental in my process of building a business on my own. Longtime close friends and supporters of Light + Grace Design, Pam and Jenni in Denver have helped expand my reach in Colorado. My dear friend and soul sister, Beth, offered to host my first Trunk Show at her home over ten years ago, and some of her friends who came are still clients of mine today. Dear friends, Tiffany, Sage and Kat and many others have supported my business endeavors wholeheartedly and my longtime and extraordinarily exquisite friend and Muse, Leah Mondry, whom I met on our first day of college, and sadly we lost tragically and too soon, always encouraged my creative projects and efforts, hoping that I’d have my own Boutique one day to showcase them. I feel that much of my strength, resilience and inspiration comes from the beautiful light that she continues to shine down on her loved ones. I am ever grateful for truly incredible and loyal clients, many of whom have become friends, while supporting and shining light on my business. My husband, Francesco, supports my endeavors, happily wears and shares Light + Grace Design, and lightens my load at home, allowing me to put in the hours that I need to run my expanding business. My children, Luca and Livia, the lights of my life, inspire me daily to live from the heart and with Light + Grace. They have been my greatest cheerleaders as I have built my business and are always willing to help when I most need it.
