We had the good fortune of connecting with Joshua Maniscalco and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joshua, other than deciding to work for yourself, what else do you think played a pivotal role in your story?
Realizing that my own belief system and programming is the only thing limiting my growth. I was a high school drop out and never finished college. I had no professional training in business. I’ve made so many mistakes and missed so many opportunities due to my self limiting beliefs. The pandemic taught me that anything is possible and I am so much stronger than I thought. I now lean into my deepest fears and challenge them on a daily basis. I am taking more risks and putting myself out there more than ever. I’ve learned that my mindset has the biggest impact on my business.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Agent Rx is my skin studio on Union Street in San Francisco. I launched the Agent Rx product line and Instagram in 2021. I’ve been a licensed Aesthetician for 18 years and my passion is education and entertainment! I’m very active on IG – creating fun, educational content to teach people how to care for their skin based on science and my experience helping thousands of people achieve healthier, glowing skin! I use a lot of wigs and create characters to deliver science and education with humor.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would start at Indian Springs in Calistoga for two nights. It’s a magical retreat with an amazing giant hot spring pool. I always come home feeling so rejuvenated and renewed.

Back in the city we would have dinner at Nopa, It’s a San Francisco staple for great California fare, cocktails, and a buzzy vibe.

We might end up at Phonobar in Hayes Valley or Decodance on Polk St for some more cocktails and great music with dancing.

One day we take a long walk through golden gate park and have a picnic in Dalia Dell with wine from Plump Jack in the Marina and sandos from Cheese Plus on Polk St.

We would visit the San Francisco zoo and then go shopping in the Mission district at all the amazing boutiques filled with local treasures.

That evening we would dine at Al’s Place, one of my favorites, offering an incredibly fresh, vegetable forward menu.

On our last day, I would treat my friend to a signature Agent Rx facial with Hydrafacial and Dermaplaning to give their skin an incredible vacation glow that would last for weeks!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My improv teacher Diana Brown. She made a huge impact in my life when I met her through Leela Improv Studio. She saw my talent and desire to perform and helped me get comfortable being uncomfortable. The first improv class I took at Leela changed my life. The philosophy of saying “yes, and” in every scene spilled over into my life and pushed me to take more risks in my business. I learned to face my fear of not knowing the outcome. I learned how to be more vulnerable in my relationships and in business. It translated to more success because I started doing things that I had been too afraid to do. After a year of improv with Leela I blossomed and have continued to push forward.

Three of my favorite books that led me to finally take an improv class were Daring Greatly by Brene Brown – Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert – Feel the fear and do it anyway by Susan B. Jeffers.
