Meet Kay Powell | Tax Professional, LIfe Insurance Agent & Senior Pastor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
As the CEO of Speedy Tax Services, I provide tax tips, financial updates and status on community issues that impact the financial stability of individuals, families and small businesses. We discuss local and national hot topics such as stimulus checks, unemployment benefits and/or renter’s assistance programs on my weekly Tax Tuesday broadcast on FB and Tax Thursday on Instagram.
We help the community by providing a platform of giving the latest information and answered questions. We assist the community in overcoming obstacles, clarifying issues and directions that hinder them from understanding or applying for available resources. We work with community organizations such as Black Small Business Association to help small businesses with tax planning and financial structure. We facilitate consumers in applying for grants, loans, set up business structures and minor tax resolutions.
What should our readers know about your business?
Speedy Tax Services is a tax preparation and bookkeeping service. My focus was to offer professional friendly service with reasonable prices. I often refer to my business as a ministry that helps taxpayers deal with complicated tax issues and take away the fear of filing taxes. If offer excellent customer service with a genuine a caring attitude to be shared amongst family members and friends. Every time we help a tax payer resolve their tax problems, it gives me joy. The journey has not been easy because we have to compete against large firms. In the past I was satisfied with word of mouth referrals, Last year, I decided to boast my clients by giving tax tips on FB and Instagram. There was so much information out there until I started researching legislation and giving updates on a weekly basis which developed into Tax Tuesdays. On the second broadcast, God told me if you exalt me I will exalt you. From then on, I make sure I give him the glory as I give the community current information regarding financial and community issues. Often I am referred to as the West Coast Guru and the Stimulus Lady. I work with other experts, speak on radio stations, work cooperatively with other organizations such as the Black Small Business Association of California to simplify complicated convoluted information at the level a common person can understand.
How did you get to where you are today business-wise. I operate my business with integrity and maintain a good reputation. I treat my clients the way I want to be treated and make myself available year around to address any issues or help with tax planning. I incorporate new mainstream ideas without comprising the integrity of the business. Some examples are offering my clients bank products like the big businesses, creating an interactive website and sustaining a presence on social media outlets
Lessons learned is no money is worth compromising your business integrity. No matter how desperate my client is there are times when I have to say no.
What I want the world to know about me or my brand and story? Every client is special to me and deserve professional top quality service. I have a personal relationship with all of my clients in some form. God first, family and then business. .
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite pass time is bowling. I’ve been an avid bowler for over 35 years. A typical night of fun is to take my best friend to Land Park Bowl to laugh, bowl and hang out with family and friends. I love the Sacramento Valley as we are two hours away from San Francisco or Lake Tahoe My next event on the itinerary would be to take them to the bay area. Some of my favorite spots are Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, and Golden Gate Bridge, I would definitely include a drive on the coastline and stop at Monterey or Carmel to enjoy some delicious seafood..
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I owe all my success to the Lord. He told me if I exalt Him then he would exalt me. I’ve have some great people in my life such as my mom, Alpha Bryant, who taught me how to work hard; children, Marvin and Crystal, who believe in me; my husband, Chuck, who loves me unconditionally; and loving sisters, Lawana, Pam, Veronica, Sarah and Danielle, who support all my endeavors. Thank you to my best friend, Merrill who has been my prayer partner for over 20 years.
