We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla (Keiko) Dempsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla (Keiko), we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When I think about risk, I think about opportunity. I’m sure we’ve all heard of the famous quote “you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”, well to me that’s true. I simply take risk because I don’t want to regret not taking them, and I don’t want to have those “what if” scenarios playing through my head, so instead I just do it. In this creative industry that I’m striving to make a career in, I believe that taking risks is what you must do to stand out. You must strive above and beyond to attain your goals and you must step outside the box of being comfortable. When it comes to my own personal experience, I’d definitely have to say that taking risks has gotten me to where I am now. Taking risks has allowed me to grow as an individual and break through my own shell and barriers. Personally, due to taking such risks I’ve been able to branch out my horizons when it comes to being a model, stylist, creative director and overall a creative in general. Along this path I’ve been blessed to meet amazing people in the industry, I’ve been able to travel, I’ve excelled in my craft in a multitude of ways, and I’ve most recently got signed by my MA (Mother Agent). I think sometimes there is a negative connotation with the word “risk” because people become fearful of what the possible outcomes could be, but to put it lightly those possible outcomes could be the best thing that ever happened to you and if by chance it isn’t then let those be lessons learned. Overall, being fearful and being comfortable can easily shadow over your greatness but taking risks can open doors for you to achieve your greatness.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from others is that I’m a model, stylist, and creative director all in one. I feel like being all three of those things allows me to view my creations from a bunch of different perspectives and ultimately let’s me execute my photoshoots the way I need and want them to be done. Another thing that I think sets me apart is my motivation and determination; I truly never give up. I’m able to be where I am at today because no matter what I keep pushing towards the place I want to be in life. However, my journey has not been the easiest one and I’m appreciative of that because it has made me a tougher individual to crack and made me realize that I’m a lot stronger than what I initially thought I was. I overcome most of my obstacles by keeping a positive mindset and understanding that just because one door closes doesn’t mean three more can’t open. Through my obstacles I’ve learned plenty of lessons and I keep them all as mental notes to launch me further into my career. I also truly have to say that my biggest obstacle is myself, because when I don’t believe in myself I essentially become my biggest competitor and doubter which is never good because if you don’t believe in yourself then no one will. Therefore, I want the world to know, when it comes to what I do for my career that I’m not giving up, that I believe in myself, and I’m tougher than I look. When it comes to my story I would hope that others can find inspiration to also never give up and to keep striving for what you want in this life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If it was a week long trip, I’d have to say I wouldn’t be visiting just one city…instead I’d take my friend to every possible location we could go to in that time frame. Also, since it is their trip I would really focus on what they would like to do, so I’d initially start off by naming the most adventurous things possible, the best food spots, amazing scenic views, some museums, art galleries, and artistic areas. I know for a fact we would have a great time but I really can’t name anything from the top of my head thus a google search is always comes in handy.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I truthfully wish I could shoutout over a hundred of people because by no means did I get to where I am by myself and there are so many creatives that deserve recognition. With that being said, I’d firstly like to give a shoutout to my family and closest friends. Secondly, I want to shoutout a few creatives that inspire me and keep me motivated- Marcel Artis (@marcelartis), Lilly Phillips (@liilly2.0), Nicholas Wolf (@nlswolf), Vince Corona (@vincecorona__), Elijah Weston (@elijahwetton), and Brandon Nicholas (@brandonnicholaz). Each individual I mentioned are tackling their dreams day by day and they continuously amaze me everyday.
